"f'V i 6C THE PALM BEACH POST WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1998 Minnesota beats Fresno St. to reach NIT championship College basketball Glades I Central sweeps LThe Raiders' April Jones and Danella Bythwood team up for six first-place finishes. By Paul Pedersen Special to the Palm Beach Post JUPITER April Jones and .' Danella Bythwood have battled each other in track for six years. . Track and field ';" - ''X. , -Urn jj The Fresno State-Georgia consolation game will precede the title game and match Bulldogs vs.. Bulldogs. During a timeout with Penn State (19-12) leading 55-54 late in the game, the crowd at Madison Square Garden was informed that Penn State had won the women's NIT by beating Baylor. WOMEN The Associated Press NEW YORK Kevin Clark scored a career-high 30 points, and Sam Jacobson added 24 as Minnesota advanced to the NIT championship with a 91-89 overtime victory against Fresno State. Fresno State's season of scandal, which included arrests, suspensions and substance abuse problems for some of its star players, was recently the focus of a 60 Minutes feature by CBS correspondent Mike Wallace. After the story was aired, Fresno State coach Jerry Tarkanian criticized Wallace for not being up front with him about its content. But at half time, Wallace, a guest of Tarkanian's, said he and the coach had spoken before the game and had "a very civilized conversation." The Gophers (19-15) left Jerry Tarkanian's club with only a consolation game remaining while advancing to play Penn State on Thursday night in the final. "This loss really hurts because of all the adversity we went through," Tarkanian said. Minnesota, which won the NIT in 1993, is playing in its second straight national semifinals after making it to the Final Four last year. "We feel this is our Final Four," Gophers coach Clem Haskins said. Fresno State was done in by poor shot selection down the stretch and a costly technical foul late in regulation. Jermaine Fowlkes led Fresno State (21-12) with 25 points and Chris Herren had 14. Penn State 66, Georgia 60: Penn State's men will now get a chance to match what their NIT championship: Lisa Shepherd and Helen Darling each made a free throw in the final 20 seconds as Penn State held off Baylor 59-56 in the championship game of the Women's NIT in Waco, Texas. Andrea Garner gave Penn State (21-13) a 53-51 lead with a short jumper with 2:46 to play. The Lady Lions extended their lead to 55-51 before Baylor's Lara Webb hit her fifth three-pointer to bring Baylor (20-1 1) within 55-54. B NAIA Div. I championship: Rose Agnoung scored 29 points and Union University of Tennessee snapped Southern Nazarene's string of four consecutive NAIA Division I women's national championships with a 73-70 victory in Jackson, Tenn. It was the first national title for Union (35-3) and broke a string of 24 consecutive tournament victories by the Lady Redskins (31-6). JENNIFER PODISStaff Photographer Glades Central's B.J Lovett leaps to his winning distance of 22 feet, 2'2 inches in the long jump in Tuesday's track and field meet at Jupiter. . The two seniors, who just happen to be best friends and Glades Central teammates, once again competed against each other and a six-team field and combined for six first-place finishes Tuesday in the Raiders' boys and girls sweep of the Jupiter track meet. "We're pretty competitive, but we look at going against each other as a chance to push the other one to the next level," said Jones, who beat Bythwood (44.83 to , 45.33) in their head-to-head running of the 300 hurdles. "Our goal is to always come in 1-2. It doesn't matter which one it is just so one of us is first." Jones also won the 100 hurdles ; (15.29) and ran a leg in the winning 1-mile relay. LATE MONDAY "I hadn't planned on things going this .well so soon," said Jones, who is the 1997 state champion and record-holder (44.32) in the 300 hurdles. "I wasn't looking for 44s (in the hurdles) this early in the season. It's pretty impressive to me." With such -an improvement in Jones' time, Glades Central girls coach Jay Seider expects her to beat her own state record this year. "April is ahead of schedule," he said. "If she keeps going, it's realistic to think that she'll be in the high 42s (at state)." The only other multiple first-place finisher for the girls was Pahokee's Chentel Gilbert, who won the shot put (36-7), and discus (99-1). women's team has already accomplished. Arkansas 77, Duke 72: Christy Smith made four free throws in the final 31 seconds after Tennille Adams scored the go-ahead basket on a putback, sending underdog Arkansas (22-10) to its first Final Four with a victory over Duke in Oakland, Calif. freshman Joe Crispin scored 18 points and the Nittany Lions advanced to the championship of the NIT with a win over Georgia.
