Special to The Palm Beach Post LANTANA The John I. Leonard baseball team produced two comebacks Tuesday evening. Fortunately for the Lancers, the one they produced for themselves proved superior to the one they produced for their opponent. The Lancers (10-4 and No. 5 in The Palm Beach Post Top 10) surged ahead with six runs in the top of the sixth, and held off a Santaluces rally fueled by four errors to defeat the Chiefs 7-6. A throwing error put Gene Balh on second base to begin the sixth. Andre Gonzalez followed with a walk, and after Chuck Layman struck out, Ryan Croteau hit an infield single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Chris Vazquez scored Balli to tie the game. With two outs, John I. Leonard took its first lead when center fielder Adam Brown singled home Gonzalez. Chiefs right-hander Ian Ettley loaded the bases with a walk to Dan D'Antonio, then hit Pete Gallivan with a pitch to extend the Lancers' lead. Alberto Gonzales and Balli came up with RBI singles, giving John I. Leonard a 7-2 bulge. After getting five strong innings from starter Gonzalez, Lancers coach George Lockhart brought in reliever Dave Patrick in the bottom of the sixth. Patrick walked first baseman Danny Vibert to begin the inning, then struck out second baseman Todd Kennamer. Rob DeMarzo drove in Vibert with a double, and advanced to third on a passed ball. A throwing error scored DeMarzo to cut the deficit to 7-4. Kevin Christie took second on the error. Santaluces third baseman Tony Pirchio followed with a dribbler that gave Patrick trouble. Trying to get Christie at third, Patrick threw high, allowing another run to score. Pirchio also took second on the miscue, and scored on another passed ball, to pull the Chiefs within a run. But Santaluces committed the game's final error. With two outs, Chivalrik Daughtry walked and stole second. He then broke for Browning; Baillie and Lanier. W-Baillie (1-3). L-King 2B-0-Morgan. By Jorge Hermida Special to The Palm Beach Post BOCA RATON Lake Worth's Pysha Simmons and Abbey Cornelius combined to hold Spanish River to four hits as the Trojans beat the Sharks 9-1 in a softball game Tuesday. Simmons gave up one run on three hits, struck out two and walked four. Three walks came in the third inning with the Trojans (14-7 and No. 10 in The Palm Beach Post Top 10) ahead 4-1. The walks loaded the bases with one out, but the Trojans escaped damage when Spanish River hit into a double play. First baseman Jennifer Stump went 3-for-4 with three runs and two steals for Lake Worth, and designated hitter Amanda Roth-rock went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Spanish River pitcher Lauren Herman threw all seven innings, but finished the game in pain after suffering a muscle cramp on her pitching arm. "She caught a cramp after getting tagged (hit by a line drive) in the fourth inning," said Spanish River coach Terence Hart, whose Sharks fell to 5-6. "It didn't look like it affected her technique, but she had so much heart that she wanted to play." Said Herman: "I have to pitch for the team. I didn't want to quit." Senior pitcher Carrie Bielecki led the Indians (11-6), throwing a two-hitter and going 4-for-5 at the plate with one double and three runs. "I was a little tired tonight. I don't think I threw a good game at all. I started going down in the fifth inning," said Bielecki (11-6), who was Vero's winning pitcher Monday against South Fork. Wellington (6-12) was down by two runs in the third inning. It stayed that way until the Indians' six-run sixth. "We've had these types of games before," Wellington coach Glenn Brannon said. "We didn't hit and we made some errors when they had men on base. Their pitcher had good location." Vero Beach added four runs in the seventh when its first four batters scored. Junior left fielder Miranda Richards went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs. "I feel frustrated," said Wellington shortstop Lindsay Tiggis, citing her team's four errors and her 0-for-3 performance at the plate. "We couldn't hit and they hit well.
