s c THE PALM BEACH POST WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1998 3C Around the horn Spotlight's on... ANDRUVV JONES, Atlanta Braves The 20-year-old outfielder has been moved to leadoff, but this isn't what the Braves had in mind. Jones is hitting .196 with 20 strikeouts in 56 at-bats. "I'm taking the first pitch a lot, trying to be patient," he said. "I'm not going to do that in the season." Pit" He's one of us now White Sox manager Jerry Manuel insists Wll Cordero will be made to feel a part of the team. "If we let a guy stand out there alone and get booed . . . then we kind of separate ourselves from that individual like, 'Well I'm clean and he's not.' Then we're going about it the wrong way." I don't have anything to say. Give me a day." JERMAINE DAY, Royals outfielder, after being sent to Class AAA Omaha on Tuesday. The Montreal Expos ended up doing the celebrating Tuesday. They snapped a 14-game losing streak by tagging the Dodgers righthander for three runs in a 6-1 win in front of 3,601 at Roger Dean Stadium. Expos (4-21) manager Felipe Alou shook up his lineup a bit by starting outfielder P.P. Santangelo at second base. "We know we are better than what a lot of people believe we are." Alou said. "We're just not playing what we know is our best offensive team because we are developing people in spring training to this day," Alou said. It was Lankford's first start since joining the Dodgers from the New York Yankees farm system in December. It dropped his record to 1-2, which included six other appearances. Lankford, who was 7-4 last season at Class AAA Columbus, said he was disappointed with his outing, which included seven hits and four strikeouts. Not so fast, said pitching coach Glenn Gregson, who has a juggling act to perform with a talented pitching staff but only 1 1 available spots. "It wasn't that bad," Gregson said of Lankford's starting debut. "He has four pitches and he commanded them well, and that's what's important. I don't look at the linescore." "He has clearly shown me he's a major-league pitcher, whether it's with us or some other team." Lankford may be com- 000 002 002 -4 000 002 32x -7 San Diego F Mouton. DP San Francisco 2, ban peting for the final spot with Dennis Reyes and Jim Bruske. If Darren Dreifort wins a starting spot, that could put Reyes in the bullpen and jeopardize Lankford's chances. Although the season is a week away, Gregson said it's way too early for decisions. "It'll come down to the last day," he said. What a week for Konerko: Before today's game, Paul Konerko will receive the Mulvey Award as the Dodgers' rookie of the spring (.324, with 14 RBI in 22 games). And he has an excellent shot at starting at first base on opening day as a fill-in for Eric Karros, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday and is expected to miss at least three weeks. Expos notes: Pitcher Kirk Bullinger will undergo surgery at Jupiter Hospital today to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. He will be out at least two months Carl Pavano will throw off a mound today for the first time since being placed on no-throw status March 15 because of tendinitis behind his right shoulder. . . . For the second and last time this spring, there will be no game today at Roger Dean Stadium. On Thursday, the Expos will host the Cardinals at 1:05 p.m. for the second to last time this spring. Their final face-off is" March 28. Using his head: Chris Delvalle, one of 40 kids from Christine Hughes' class at Conniston Middle School who attended Tuesday's game, didn't need a ball or program to get an autograph from Expos outfielder Rondell White. Chris, 12, had White sign his forehead with a black marker. Tampa Bay 101 030 010 -6 Toronto 303 002 E Sprague, Guzman. DP-Tampa Bay 1, Toronto 1. LOB-Tampa Bay 4, Toronto . 2B-Trammell, Sprague.
