THE PALM BEACH POST WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1998 MSL E Cecil Brenner, 79, developed method for testing tire safety 7 Palm Beach Post Wire Reports WASHINGTON F. Cecil Brenner, a fiber scientist who . developed the government stan- dard that rates the safety and performance of automobile tires, died Thursday of complications after surgery for a brain tumor. He was 79. , Mr. Brenner developed the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System, which grades tires according to tread wear, traction , and temperature resistance. " The system was adopted into law in 1975 to give motorists comparative performance and mileage information. Mr. Brenner was responsible for developing the system as Tire Systems Division chief at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's Safety Research Laboratory. F. Bergan, N.Y. judge ALBANY, N.Y. Francis Bergan, a state court of appeals judge who was known for his decision on a landmark comparative negligence case brought against Dow Chemical, died Monday. He was 95. Mr. Bergan attended Albany Law School while working full time as a reporter for The Knickerbocker Press, graduating in 1923. He obtained a bachelor's degree from Siena College in 1948, when he was already a state Supreme Court justice. Gov. Thomas Dewey appointed Mr. Bergan in 1942 to the state Appellate Court and in 1963 Gov. Nelson Rockefeller named him to the state Court of Appeals, the state's highest court. He retired in 1972. G. MacGregor, reporter Greg MacGregor, a foreign correspondent who reported on the Korean War as well as economic and political developments in Southeast Asia during a 17-year career at The New York Times, died on Sunday in Pompano Beach. He was 85. The cause of death was cancer, according to his family. Cardinal Ribeiro of Lisbon LISBON, Portugal Antonio Ribeiro, the Roman Catholic cardinal of Lisbon known for his efforts to modernize the church in Portugal, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 69. Church officials said Cardinal Ribeiro died in a clinic in the suburbs of Lisbon. B. Cross, playwright LONDON Beverley Cross, the playwright and screenwriter who helped launch Dame Maggie Smith on her illustrious acting career and later married her, has died. He was 66. Mr. Cross died at home Friday. Mr. Cross, whose mother was an actress and father was a theater manager, wrote the book for the 1963 musical Haifa Sixpence, and the screenplay fort the film version four years later. J. Milholland, publisher I STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - James Milholland Jr., a publishing executive for 37 years, died' March 16. He was 76. Mr. Milholland worked on medical text-; books, farm journals, and even; worked with poet Carl Sandburg during his years at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in Cleveland; and New York. She quit to raise her family, but when her husband needed help, she returned to work helping build what Is now one of the largest private residential construction companies In Michigan. Her husband, Cosimo died in 1988, and many people encouraged her to sell the business, but she was determined to create a legacy for her children who were too young to take over. Under her leadership, the company grew and ber family eventually took control of the business. Mrs. Lombardo is survived by two daughters, Anna Lisa and Catherine; two sons, Anthony and Sebastian, her mother Pauline Mocerl,' a sister.
