"This allows patients to under go the therapy close to home,' Buchbinder said, eliminating the need to travel great distances at a time when they are worried about health and survival. . "We're very proud of the fact that our program is approaching its fifth anniversary and still has a mortality rate of zero," said Dr. Harish Malhotra, director of the bone-marrow treatment program-at J.T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y. Buchbinder underscored, however, that survival depends "on the specifics of the patient s underlying disease and not on the stem-cell procedure itself." High-dose chemotherapy to-kill cancerous cells, Malhotra estimates, can be 20 times to 30 times the usual amount of cancer-fighting drugs given to patients. . Chemotherapy is used to treat some breast cancer patients, particularly those with advanced disease that has failed other forms of-therapy, and people with various' types of leukemia and lymphoma Lymphomas are malignancies of the lymphatic system, such as Hodgicin's disease. Once the chemo has been ad- ministered, Buchbinder said, patients are temporarily without immunity. "They can be given the infusion of stem cells as soon as the chemotherapy has been eliminated from the body," he said. Buchbinder and other cancer-specialists say it takes a few days, for the chemotherapy drugs to be eliminated from the body. By Delthia Ricks Newsday In a deep freeze at minus 396 degrees F., as cold as the unforgiving fringes of the solar system, doctors have captured in suspended animation tiny lifesaving cells that carry the blueprint for a patient's entire blood and immune systems. Dr. Aby Buchbinder, head of the adult bone-marrow program at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., has found the clinical application of human stem-cell research a boon for people with cancer. "This has been a tremendous advance for many, many patients," he said. In a decade, stem-cell transplants have replaced the use of bone-marrow transplants in many cases, providing patients with the specific components in bone marrow that create a healthy new blood supply and immune system. Stem cells are the parent cells that give rise to the family of cellular elements that make up the blood and immune systems: red blood cells that shuttle oxygen to tissues and the variety of white cells that help the body fight infection. In an autologous stem-cell transplant, Buchbinder explained, a patient's own cells are harvested and held in a liquid nitrogen tank at a supercold temperature. Harvesting in many cases involves removing cells much the same way blood is drawn from a donor. Hospitals large and small in recent years much like their big university-associated counter WINSTON From ID ;opportunity. - Although Winston insists jewels are loaned on a first-come, first-served basis, many of the celebrities wait until the last minute anyway. ' Louise Fletcher, the Best Actress of 1975 (she played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), was the first through the door. She came alone, "sans publicist or stylist. ; " Although the whole small store is like an inner sanctum, Fletcher was ushered into the sanctum sanctorum, past a second undercover armed guard. That's where Armand Galvan-Espinola, store manager, does his work. ', He disappeared into the vault, and returned with a laden tray. Fletcher admitted she'd been worried before coming in. "I said to someone, 'My God, what if you go and you don't like anything? What do you say?' " That turned out not to be a problem. "These a beautiful," she said, admiring a pair of $65,000 diamond hoop earrings, "but I would be worried about wearing clips. What if one fell off? That would be your worst nightmare." Tell Jessica Yu about it. When the documentary film maker got home last year after accepting her Oscar for Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien, she noticed a diamond was missing from her $40,000 bracelet. "I was having this total Guy de Mau passant moment," she told The New York Times, "where I thought I'm going to be making films for the rest of my life to pay back Harry Winston." The store discovered the diamond had fallen out in its vault, but the loss would have been covered by Winston's insurance policy. As Fletcher was finishing up she went for a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond and sapphire bracelet Armand mentioned that another Oscar winner, Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), had just arrived. As if further proof was needed that all stars know each other, the two greeted like old friends. Matlin and her group her little daughter, a friend and the head of her production company, Jack Jason squeezed into Ar-mand's salon, and a new round of jewels was brought out. "What about this?" Matlin-asked Jason, as she held an "important" (that's Winston-speak for expensive) diamond necklace around her neck and smiled in an attempt to win him over. "Too heavy," he said. Marlee spotted a photograph of Elizabeth Taylor wearing a Flintstone-size diamond pendant necklace. "What about that?" "That's the Hope diamond, " Jason replied. (It wasn't.) After settling on a few hundred thousand worth of jewels and telling her daughter that she "loved her more" than a whole tray's worth, it was time for Marlee to go. "Off to Spago," said Jason. A quick fact-finding mission up the street to Armani's glitzy stpre revealed that Ma Affleck would be wearing a black diamante jacket with chiffon pants. A necklace would be lost in the high collar, but the publicist saw( an opportunity on her ears. "I'll sneak earrings to her," he said. So, who else is wearing what? The folks at Winston could teach George Stephanopoulos a thing or two about keeping a secret. Asked if anyone would be wearing one of the store's tiaras to the Oscars, a publicist said: "I don't know, and if I did, you'd have to shoot me. And even then." She's not going to the Academy Awards, but needs a glamour injection for the parties afterward. "I'm doing the diamond boogie," she said as she danced around the store. Dixie Highway, Opera review Soprano Victoria Atwater gave the role of Valencienne a perky, and even slightly mysterious tone.. Her luscious and powerful voice added an operatic dimension to-this little theater piece, and she belted out the high notes with, little difficulty. Tenor Bruce Reed was also outstanding. As Camille, he displayed an exceptional stage presence and a superb vocal talent. The gorgeous aria Yours is My Heart Alone was dramatic in its sweep, and his Act 2 duet with Atwater was captivating. Elias Eliadis gave an engaging comedic flavor to the role of Baron Zeta. His baritone voice did not impress, but Zeta's role requires more acting than singing, and Eliadis was perfectly at home delivering funny lines with a thick and unidentifiable European accent. Jones' piano accompaniment; was nicely handled, and the inclusion of violinist Bruce Wethey in! several of the numbers gave an-1 other interesting dimension to the; performance. tfGAl CINfMAS BOYNTON I 22CONGttSSAVt. 7340049 UNTTfTJ AfhSTS iwvtsuiuiaTua 1,J VJOH IUJMHD 77i-1700 UNttTO AimsTS WSttttG0UM KXAirlWllA,AJIH 624-2664 TRAIL DRrVT-IN 3438 LAKE WOUIH ID 9654546 tfGAl CINtMAS JUPITER I 201 NOtlH U.S. I 747-7333 UNrrfD ADSTS MOVItStTiXHSOuUi 202J CxfKrlQUi hvD. 6v7-866 UNITfO ArTISTS mm e mum tut KXlil MrU UVD. 641-3102 14, mm "Ihe hottest twee 'Bisie InjtwctjA fBeiilisblj cltierl A wiijjliej" A 3 4 SrsZ 7tSgl LAW; WuSTI !'' Faucett Special to The Palm Beach Post WEST PALM BEACH Franz Lehar's delightful and well-loved operetta The Merry Widow was given a fine performance Sunday evening at Rosarian Academy by the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Society. The modest but effective production was led by the company's able artistic director Jack W. Jones and featured strong singers, many of whom are familiar to area audiences. Like most of Lehar's 38 operettas, The Merry Widow is thin on plot but is brimming with some of the best songs in the genre. Soprano Demetra George, cast in the role of the widow Hanna Glawari, gave the aria Kiss My Lips a sensational lilt, while the popular Vilia was sung with an irresistible charm. George's voice is perfect for operetta and she is a convincing actress. A regular on South Florida stages, she rarely disappoints. The usually reliable baritone Malcolm Arnold, as Danilo Dan-ilowitsch, was not up to his usual high standard. Although he nicely demonstrated his rich, buttery voice in There Once Was a Prince, his acting was a bit stiff and he repeatedly strained to reach the top of his vocal range. kSlV-A-e- V -aw OPENS 4 TONIGMTIww-I ! . !) uu'a:i. tJ.w4 EC a fimithr vchklc t v'Mir dream in The I'ilm !Wri V,i C1ji!".clU.
