By Joe Capozzl y Palm Beach Post Staff Wter JUPITER Nearly 18 years after retiring, Hall of Famer Lou Brock can remember his first game, his first hit, his first home run, even his first strikeout. But his first stolen base? A pause. Laughter. "I can't remember," Brock the "Sultan of Swipes" whose 938 stolen bases are a National League record said Monday at Roger Dean Stadium Stadium. "I think it was against the Cardinals. At least, that's what somebody told me." For the record, Brock was a rookie outfielder for the Chicago Cubs on April 13, 1962, when he beat St Louis catcher Gene Oliver's throw to second for his first stolen base. While Brock went on to refine the art of base stealing after he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, he says he never intended to forge his career by tormenting catchers. His base stealing came about as a matter of job security, not long after he arrived in St. Louis in June 1964 as an unproven 24-year-old outfielder. The Cubs traded him for pitcher Ernie Broglio, who had been 18-8 the year before. (Bob Gibson thought it was the worst trade he'd ever heard of.) After finishing second to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1963, the Cardinals wanted to revive the scrappy-play philosophy of the old Gas House Gang the fabled Cardinals team that won the 1934 World Series with, among other things, daring base running. When manager Johnny Keane ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS For help and information call PB-B6UU or OOr-IBOl ANN'S PRIVATE STUDIO TT req. Brock was almost right; Keane wanted another Maury Wills. Brock remembered catcher Bob Uecker volunteering for the job but Keane said: "Brock, you're it." Brock described the exchange: "Keane said, 'You do want to steal bases.' And I said, 'Yes, sir.' "Young players know the words 'Hall of Famer' mean you perform well and you're capable of handling most situations," Brock said. Dr. Ralph Gambardella examined Karros on Monday and decided to proceed with the surgery because he suspects cartilage damage. Karros has had persistent pain in his left knee this spring that hasn't responded well to treatment, team physician Dr. Frank Jobe said. Karros returned to Los Angeles on Friday from the Dodgers' camp in Vero Beach Rookie Paul Konerko will likely play first base in Karros' absence. Konerko hit .323 with 37 Sr'a welcome. He. Kansas City Royals: Ace Kevin Appier will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder today, the team said. An MRI exam on Monday revealed the problem, and his status for 1998 will be determined after team physician Dr. Steve Joyce performs the operation. New York Mets: While the team kept on talking with other clubs about trades, Armando Reynoso had an important discourse with his right elbow. It told him that he's just not ready to start ballgames. And that communication could make their pitching conundrum both clearer and cloudier. "I think maybe I'm not 100 percent ready," he said after four nondescript innings in the Mets' 3-2 exhibition victory over the Montreal Expos. for a team since Boston dropped him for wife beating, finally found one when Chicago agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract. Cordero received a 90-day suspended sentence and was ordered to attend regular counseling sessions after pleading guilty in November to beating and threatening his wife last June. "I realize what I did was wrong," Cordero, 26, said in a statement Monday. Atlanta Braves: John Smoltz, who underwent surgery on his right elbow in December, made his second appearance of spring training, working two strong innings in an 8-4 loss to the Los Arigeles Dodgers. Cincinnati Reds: Pete Rose's little talk to team's minor leaguers this month resulted in a reprimand, not a fine. NL President Len Coleman, acting at the behest of acting commissioner Bud Selig, told the Reds of the decision Monday.
