BOCA RATON (c) New York Times NEW YORK - Stock prices pushed higher across a wide front yesterday as the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. traded at its highest price in a decade. The shares of AT&T sold as high as 63 before closing at 63V4, up . Psychologically, the performance of the nation's most widely owned stock acted as a tonic to a market that was away and running from the opening bell. The Dow Jones industrial average bounded ahead 5 points in the first half hour, was up more than 9 points in the early afternoon and finally settled for an advance of 7.48 points to close at 970.74. This was the best closing average for the blue-chip barometer in more than two months. Booming volume accompanied the buoyant market, with heavy block trading by institutions and strings of 100-share trades by individuals. The turnover of 31.8 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange was the heaviest since late September. New 1976 highs outpaced lows by a 30-1 ratio, while more than 1,-000 issues rose on the exchange. There were fewer than 500 declining stocks on the Big Board. The American Stock Exchange also operated at a stepped-up pace; its turnover of 3.75 million shares was the highest since early March. Investors' increased activity in lower-price and secondary stocks has brought greater attention lately to the Amex. Basically, the market has moved up recently on expectations that President-elect Carter will stimulate the lagging domestic economy and that the oil-producing nations this month will impose a price increase that will not be so big as to disrupt the western industrial nations' economies. Beneficial Corp., a consumer loan company that has shown improving profits, rose a point to 27'A yesterday after setting a yearly high. Bank, natural resource and retail issues generally moved ahead. Sears, Roebuck rose a point to 69V4. DuPont, the chemical giant that was under pressure not long ago, proved the star of the Dow industrials as it gained 2 to 130V4. Esmark, formerly Swift & Co., was the only point-plus loser in the Dow average's 30 component stocks. It fell m to 33. There were several oddities in yesterday's stock market despite the overall buoyant tone. For one thing, IBM, which usually leads the way for stock prices generally, eased to 272 while the rest of the list was racing ahead. Domestic oil producers continued to rise. Superior Oil rose 4 points to 240 and sold at a 1976 high. General Bancshares, the first registered bank holding company in Missouri, rose a point to 12 and set a yearly high. Combined trading in all Big Board issues expanded to 37.23 million shares from 28.91 million shares. The Amex market value index, closing at its highest level since late September, rose 1.11 to 102.80. In the strong oil-and-gas sector, Dome Petroleum advanced 1 to 3514 after an official commented that analysts' estimates of a 26 per cent increase in annual earnings were "modest." Reflecting the heavy volume on the Big Board, options activity climbed to 46,796 contracts from 31,-774 in the previous session. On the Chicago Board Options Exchange .118,225 contracts were traded, against 79,469 on Wednesday. In the over-the-counter market, the NASDAQ composite index rose 0.73 to 94.10, while the industrial index went up 0.69 to 95.76.
