In July, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries in West Palm Beach became the local distribution site for SHARE (Self Help and Resource Exchange), a national food-supply network. Recognizing the value of SHARE to those at risk of hunger, the local Hunger Task Force set a goal of making SHARE more accessible to residents. The objective was to bring SHARE food packages to the area for direct distribution. Previously, volunteers from SHARE "host" sites had to travel to Port Everglades to pick up food; the traveling prevented many smaller organizations from participating. But with the determination of Becky Gregory, Beth Owen, Kathy Spencer and Bud Tamarkin all members of the Hunger Task Force Gulfstream Goodwill SHARE was born. Gulfstream Goodwill Industries donated its warehouse facility and equipment, its staff and volunteers to operate a new distribution center for food collection by host sites in Palm Beach and Martin counties. julfstream Goodwill I SHARE'S first distribution I day ran more smoothly and efficiently than warehouse manager John Lander or dock captain Rita Brown expected. There were few, if any, glitches. "What a pleasant surprise," said Sara Snyder of Community Caring Center. "This is wonderful." The food includes a variety of frozen meats, some staples, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The Las Novias Society has awarded scholarships to six high-school graduates. They are Robert Bannister and Jason Harper (standing), and Tomirror Ryles, Kelli Johnson, Sylvia Budd and Lakhara Mainer (seated). The awards were made possible by proceeds from the society's 40th-anniversary brunch. For information, call (561) 832-7431.
