"Davis obviously has a much better resume than I do. You've got to go pretty far down the rankings to get from where Davis is to where I am." Eight of the 12 U.S. Ryder Cup team members played a practice round at the course Aug. 30 in preparation for the tournament that will be held in this Boston suburb Sept. 24-26. Love couldn't make it because he was seeing a doctor. Crenshaw said he invited the players to Boston so they would grow more comfortable with each other. But he also knew it wouldn't hurt to have an extra chance to see The Country Club's blind tee shots and cozy greens. So, what did Estes think? "It's my kind of course. I was glad to see it was more about position than brute strength," Estes said. 'To tell you the truth, this course probably suits my game more than Davis'. But Davis can play any course." Drive, Chip and Putt: Hi e Golf Channel will bring its "Drive, Chip and Putt" competition to PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens on Sept. 25. The first 120 golfers, ages 7-12, who register on or before Sept 22 will be eligible to compete. Registration forms are available at Comcast Cable offices, PGA National, the PGA Foundation and the South Florida PGA office. Completed forms should be sent to Comcast Cable, Attention Drive, Chip and Putt, 1401 Northpoint Parkway, West Palm Beach, 33407. All participants will be notified by mail, telephone or e-mail. Winners from each age division (7-8, 9-10 and 11-12) will advance to the national finals in November at Orlando. Dunhill Cup team: The United States team in this year's Dunhill Cup will look more like team Orlando. Named to the team Monday were Payne Stewart and Mark O'Meara, with fellow Orlando resident Tiger Woods the best possibility for the third spot. The tournament will be Oct 7-10 at St. Andrews, Scotland. captain Ben Crenshaw, it's more the latter. "He is fine," Crenshaw said Monday, referring to Love. "He's rested and relaxed. The nerve problem apparently has gone away for now." Crenshaw said he has talked to Love three times this week and heard encouraging reports; Love's agent has also said he expects him to play. Even so, Estes called Crenshaw and volunteered to come to Boston on his way back from the Canadian Open in Toronto, where he finished tied for 15th last weekend. "I'm the first alternate and Davis Love is hurt," said Estes, who missed making the U.S. team by one stroke in the PGA Championship. "Hopefully, hell be OK But if for some reason he can't play, I needed to come see the course just in case. ... I'll be preparing as if I'm going to be in there." The top 10 golfers on the Ryder Cup points list make the team, and the captain gets to add two players of his own choice. If any of the top 10 has to drop out, he would be replaced by No. 11, Estes. Crenshaw skipped him in favor of Tom Lehman (No. 12) and Steve Pate (No. 14). "It would be great to be a part of that team and play in that tournament, but I'm not supposed to play, Davis is," said Estes, PGA Tour Trn Money -' 1. Tiger Woods 18 $4,266,585 2. You may place a ball on the spot where your ball lay before it was struck by your fellow competitor. If the lie had been altered by his shot, you may place a ball in the nearest lie most similar to the original lie, within 1 club-length, and not nearer the hole or in a hazard. Scotland will be represented in the 45th World Cup by Colin Montgomerie, the leading money-winner in Europe, and Dean Robertson. The PGA decided to change the dates of the Grand Slam after Woods won the PGA Championship at Medinah last month, but committed to play in his first World Cup, joining friend Mark O'Meara. One source close to the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Woods will receive about $1 million in appearance fees to play at the Mines Resort in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Associated Press The PGA of America changed the dates of the Grand Slam of Golf on Tuesday to make sure Tiger Woods could play in the tournament for this year's major championship winners. While the PGA accommodated the world's No. 1 player by moving the Grand Slam back one week to Nov. 23-24, it did no favors for Paul Lawrie. Forced to choose between the Grand Slam, originally scheduled for Nov. 16-17, and representing his country for the first time in the World Cup, which begins Nov. 18 in Malaysia, Lawrie decided to go to Key Scoring: Average score per 1 8 holes.
