"A lot of kids and adults who get into a lighter type of pop music missed hearing it. Now it's almost more than enough. Boy band after boy band after boy band. "But no one can deny that the music is catchy and that these bands are entertainers who connect with their audience. YM readers simply can't get enough of them." Good thing, because what goes around comes around. A brief review: The Beatles Some argue that the Fab Four weren't your basic "boy band" because they wrote and played their own stuff. Point well taken. But they did have classic boy-band roles, and they were, well, adorable, non-threatening and worthy of a lunch box. "George was shy, Ringo was funny, Paul was cute, and John was both the smart one and the bad boy," Clover says. "The British, in fact, perfected the idea of specific categories with the Spice Girls Sporty, Scary, Baby, Posh and Ginger. There's no ambiguity there." The Monkees In 1965, a year after Beatlemania slammed into the States, TV execs scrambled aboard the pop-culture bandwagon by auditioning young actors for a show featuring a fabricated band. By gosh, the teens had talent! Songs such as The Last Train to Clarksville, Daydream Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday made young girls go ape and teen magazines pump out extra issues. The group called it quits in 1971, but there have been occasional reunions, wrinkles notwithstanding. Menudo Six years after the Monkees split up, four Puerto Rican BOY BANDS From ID trauma," jokes DJ Kevin Cross), the group is making a serious go at a recording deal. ! And the timing couldn't be better. Because these days, you see, boy bands rule. r Formula groups are nothing new consider the made-for-TV Monkees who debuted in 1966 with that dishy Davy Jones! but never have there been so many boy bands grappling for adolescent adoration at one time. On top are the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync and 98, followed by British "lad band" Five (developed by Spice Girls creators Bob and Chris Herbert) and Latin trio No Mercy. There's also Boyzone, C Note and a spate of others being stamped out like rivets by savvy music moguls salivating over the trend. ; The unlikely drive behind the deluge, many experts say, is Kurt Cobain. Huh? Yep, the Nirvana lead singer anything but a clean-cut charmer who killed himself in 1994, three years after releasing the national anthem of angst, Smells like Teen Spirit. . ; "In the early '90s, grunge was the music of significance," says Joshua Clover, a writer for SPIN magazine who lives in Berkeley, Ca. "But it wasn't fun, and that got old. The boy-band resurgence is a backlash against that" Alyssa Vitrano, YM features editor, "agrees. The magazine's August issue, with 98 on the cover, spiked adolescent temperatures and became one of the "year's top-selling issues. "Grunge music didn't allow for fun Photo by NORMAN JEAN ROY 98 teens formed the first perpetual boy band. Their jeans were snug, their smiles sincere, and yousa, could they movel Since 1977, Menudo whose members change because they "graduate" at 16 has released nearly 40 albums, four in English, the rest in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. Now in its ninth incarnation, the band is revisiting the spotlight because of ex-member and current solo sensation Ricky Martin, who lived la vida Menudo from 1984 to 1989. New Kids on the Block Maurice Starr, the producer who created New Edition (Candy Girl, Cool It Now) in 1981, decided to replicate the group by swapping out African-American teens for suburban white Boston boys. The New Kids debuted in 1986, peaked around 1990 (Please Don't Go Girl, Step by Step) and split up three years later. Not so coincidentally, New Kids management duo Johnny and Donna Wright based in Orlando also have a hand in the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. "Lou Pearlman (another Backstreet operative) and I and Donna used to joke about turning Orlando into the next Motown, but we were going to call it Snowtown because we weren't doing it with R&B acts but with pop acts," Johnny Wright told Rolling Stone last year. "I guess you could say Backstreet Boys are The Temptations, and 'N Sync are the Four Tops." Hanson Like the Beatles (although purists cringe at the comparison), Hanson isn't considered a typical boy band because its members three blond brothers from Tulsa, Okla. wrote and played their own tunes. 1997's MMMBop was hardly rocket science, but it re-launched the screaming teen bedlam of New Kids on the Block. So by the late '90s, you see, bubble gum had definitely blown away Seattle's flannel-clad gloom and doom. Pop music, puppy love and posters There are several reasons why boy bands are so, gosh, alluring. It's a standard recipe. 1) Kids spend money on music. Adolescents drop about $2,794,945,100 on tunes each year, according to industry reports. Right now, there are 31 million American teens with $122 billion in disposable income. Plus, girls and guys buy boy-band records (although it's the ladies who lap up celebrity mags such as Teen Beat, YM, Tiger Beat and Teen People, pumping bucks into yet another industry) . 2) The boys aren't really "boys." (Except in Hanson, which had a 12-year-old baby-brother drummer). Like, what girl yearns for a freckle-faced menace who looks like he'd sneak a frog in your pocket? Boy-band members are almost all in their early 20s. Just old enough to be mature, but not old enough to be scary. Perfect for a poster or pillow case. 3) There are classic boy-band roles that create a guy for every girl. The "sensitive" one: Howie Dorough, 26, in Backstreet Boys. The "hunk": Danny Marques, 23, in West Palm Beach's Lattitude. The "bad boy": Joey Fatone, 22, of 'N Sync. The "cute" one: Davy Jones of the Monkees. The "smart" one: John Lennon of the Beatles. The "bad boy": Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block (who really did get a little naughty, once setting fire in a Members (from left): Nick Lachey, 25, the "hunk"; Justin Jeffre, 26, the "sensitive" one; Jeff Timmons, 26, the "sweet" one; and Drew Lachey, 23, the "baby" Formed: In 1995 in Cincinnati. Motown advised the suburban pals to move to New York and listen to a few Harlem gospel choirs to get some "flavor." Sappy lyric: "Just tell me how you want it, girl. And let me prove that my love is true. There ain't a thing that I won't try, 'cause I now I'll be good to you." Wanna Love You Quote: "I don't know that the boy-band label is unfair, but as many things as there are that may be similar about us, there are 25 million things that are different." Timmons in Billboard ! -X:' Vv4' ..." - ' ' " " f : t ''""'- E - : " - ' j taiil-i r tint -' --- hotel). 4) There's always a hint of maybe, just maybe availability. In other words, the guys never admit to girlfriends. Says Chris Kirkpatrick, 27, of 'N Sync: "I'm old enough to date. There's just never time!" And the Hanson brothers in 1997 Isaac, then 16; Taylor, 14; and Zac, 12 claimed to still be searching for "that special girl." (If they are hitched teen heartthrob Andy Gibb, for instance, had a wife it's kept hush hush.) 5) The boys aren't just cute, they're apple-pie sweet Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys mentioned an irksome encounter with Hanson in the New York Daily News last year, but he doesn't sling barbs. "One time we did a show with them," he recalls. "I don't know whether they were busy or not but, well, I was brought up to be nice to everyone." Swoon. 'Totally packaged, totally image' "The bottom line is that chicks dig it," cracks Kevin Cross, a West Palm Beach DJ who launched Lattitude. "That's why I wanted to create a boy band to get the girls, to hear them scream, to get the spread of deli meats backstage." Cross auditioned local guys at the Wild 95.5 studio, then had them record a cover of Because of You, a song by 98. Rhythm boutique in West Palm Beach served up hip duds, and local lensman Greg Ross snapped a few photos. A band was born! "The joke was to be a total ripoff of the Backstreet Boys," says Cross, who plays the triangle ("we're the only boy band with a triangle") and provides "sexy voice-overs like Barry White." "You know, hair, looks and face above everything else. Totally packaged, totally image. My grand plan was to do an autograph signing at The Gardens mall even though these guys had never cut a record and have Vanilla Ice run out and sing Ice, Ice Baby" Cross' vision never materialized because "the problem with these guys," he says, "is they have talent." Lattitude hopes to ride not just the boy-band wave but the Latin craze as well. And there'll always be an audience for teen idols. "There's a new crop of kids 7-, 8-and 9-year-olds who're too young for Backstreet Boys, and they'll need music of their own," formula band master Johnny Wright told The Boston Globe. "And it's so supported by parents. We had a gangsta-rap situation with killings and a lot of negativity. Hard rock was in, and there was a cry for more positive images. "Pop radio, indeed, is finally pop again." 1997 AP File Photo 'N SYNC . Members (from left): Lance Bass, 20, the "shy" one; J.C. Chasez, 23, the "cute" one; Joey Fatone, 22, the "bad boy"; Chris Kirkpatrick, 27, the "hunk"; and Justin Timberlake, 18, the "baby" Formed: In 1995 by Kirkpatrick, an employee of Universal Studios in Orlando, who hooked up with Timberlake and Chasez, ex-members of Disney's Mickey Mouse Club Oust like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera). I Sappy lyric: "If you want me girl, let me know. I am down on my knees. I can't take it anymore." Tearin' Up My Heart Trivia: 'N Sync was shepherded by Johnny and Donna Wright, a husband and wife team who managed New Kids on the Block and helped form Backstreet Boys. t ; Quote: "When we read teen magazines, and they're like These Fab Five fifties,' we're like, 'Wrong!'" Fatone in People Theaters today Faux Braille splits jewelry design world By Kemba J. Dunham The Wall Street Journal This fall, a company called Lara Boeing 747 will launch a jewelry collection with the phrase "love is blind" in Braille on edgy-looking plastic cuffs and rubber bracelets. The dots aren't raised, so blind people won't be able to understand the words. But company founder Lara Bohinc just thinks Braille looks cool. "It's graphically beautiful," the London designer effuses. In trendy circles from New York to London, beautiful young people have seized on a 175-year-old reading system for the blind and made it the latest in hot accessories. The new teen magazine CosmoGirl! recently included the dotted jewelry in a short list of items "coming fast," along with videophones and airbrushed T-shirts. This fall, New York designer Kevin Carney will introduce his "Braille" T-shirt line in boutiques world-wide. Versace is ' selling shirts and skirts adorned with little Braille-like dots. Retailers say customers are -snapping up Braille fashion because it of fers a sleek look for the next millennium. "It's very futuristic," says Aimee Mercer, an ac- . cessory buyer for Henri Bendel in New York, which will carry the "love is blind" line. But as this surprising trend takes off, it is splintering the little world of Braille jewelry design-ers. On one side is Bohinc, who cheerfully appropriates Braille to make her jewelry look sleek. On the other are designers who ob- x ject to appropriation of Braille as a gimmick. Not only do they use ,x real Braille (that is, with bumps) -A on their jewelry, but they are also selling it as a way of spreading . awareness about the reading -system. And they donate jewelry ! or a portion of their sales to groups representing the blind. 10:15 Teaching Mrs. Tingle (PG-13), 2. 4, 7:45. 10 The 13th Warnor (R), 2:15, 4:45, 7:15, 9:45 The Thomas Crown Affair (R), 1:45, 4:15, 7:30, 10 REGAL DELRAY 18 CINEMAS, 1668 S.
