4D THE PALM BEACH POST MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1999 MSL How to dress like hot, young TV stars 'Popular1 What? Even the vice president' thinks I should he a granddad 01! PJ s r i J. a I y; jffi 'f m ' board was congratulating Gore. He looked over the crowd in order to find someone of an appropriate age to whom he could pose a particular question. The question was: "How many grandchildren do you have?" He chose me. Gently slapped my shoulder and asked what I thought, at my young age, was an entirely ridiculous question. Not if I had grandchildren, but how many? I'm too young, I said. Gore looked puzzled. Kept right on smiling. But you're about my age, he said. A terrible truth sank in. I am about his age 50. Thanks, Al. Fifty. Old phrases take on new meanings. I have told my kids to avoid: that depends. And: shades of gray. And: golden years. I have banned household use of the following words and phrases: old, really old, deaf, memory, memory loss, retirement, retire, tired, Ike, Elvis, when you were young, " now that you're old, Centrum Silver and how are you feeling. In a recent conversation with my youngest s6fi;i mentioned we didn't have PCs or , SuperMario when I was 7. He pondered for a moment Then he asked, Did you have cars? Of course, I said. How old do you think I am anyway? .. Fifty, he said..- ... ..,.. My 16-year-old daughter asked me a question about ..... World War II. I figure she's finally interested in history..., . She figures I was there. Suddenly, at 50, the pre- ",, sumption is I was there at the' Creation. That lends new , credibility to my parental pronouncements. I like that Sort of. J'J 'd:;;;;.' Fifty. y. - It's just a number. A dirty rotten, lowdown, vicious number. And you don't even get discounts at the talkies. -" I just hope I have 50 more. Then 111 join AARP. MRP From ID show you a dupe, because between 50 and 55 AARP offers no freebies, just the discounted subscription to Modem Marurity. Heck, you don't even get movie discounts until you're 55. Joining AARP at 50 is a declaration of premature geezerhood. Some things do change at 50. You don't care what the yield to maturity is on the 30-year Treasury bond. And presidential candidates are suddenly younger than you. Cops and nurses and clergy have been younger than you for a decade now, but the thought of the president being your age, or younger, is a source of distress. A few months ago I met Al Gore. He's 51, looks 41, great shape. He was on board Air Force Two and had just learned he was going to be a grandfather. Everybody on , What it's about: A comical look at the universal quest for popularity and acceptance at a typical American high school. Where you can see it 8 p.m. Thursdays on WB Who's the designer Carol Ramsey . Previous credits: Don 't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and four Merchant Ivory productions, including Mr. and Mrs. Bridge and Surviving Picasso ; What we can expect from the clothes: A blend of what teens are wearing in the late 90s and what Jackie Kennedy wore in the early '60s. Huh? Ramsey explains that Popular is set at Jackie Kennedy High School, and the campus namesake proved to be her creative muse for finding a look unduplicated on the TV dial. The colors are controlled, the lines are very clean, and the patterns are very simple," Ramsey says. What you won't see: Bluejeans, layers and tank tops. "We wanted to do something really different ; . . and give it an unusual, controlled look," Ramsey says. The extras wear jeans, but the main characters really don't And I banned navy blue and red." Where she gets her inspiration: Ramsey flipped through issues of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar torn the early '60s to develop the icy color palette of Popular mint greens, pale blues and baby pinks, accented with white, silver and black. She approached the show like she would one of the heavily designed, stylized Merchant Ivory films she's worked on, researching a microcosm of society and creating an appropriate look. "You're placing these characters in a dramatic setting and then designing that setting," she says. "It really goes beyond going out to the malls and shopping." 'RoswelF . ' What if s about Teenager Liz Parker forms otherworldly friendships with classmate Max Evans, his sister Isabel and his friend Michael, all of whom are descendants of the alien spacecraft that, according to legend, crashed in the New Mexico desert in 1947. Where you can see it 9 p.m. Wednesdays on WB Who's the designer Laura Goldsmith (making her first foray into episodic TV after designing for pilots and made-for-TV movies) What we can expect from the clothes: Goldsmith says she is trying to keep the wardrobe "a little bit true to the actual geographic territory" of New Mexico. The sheriff and his son, for example, both favor Western duds. "We try to sneak it in there wherever we can." She's tried to give regular girl Liz "a homey kind of feel" through the use of vintage pieces. Liz's best friend, the flighty Maria, is into vintage fashion with a humorous twist "Now that these kids are 18, the '80s are vintage to them." .- Isabel the alien, however, has a definite fashion flair. "Her clothes are much more colorful, and she is much more into dressing up and being stylish." The boy aliens try not to draw attention to themselves through their clothes, Goldsmith says. . Where she found the costumes: In many cases, directly from vendors such as Diesel and Earl for jeans. Also in thrift stores and Urban Outfitters. ; I What she's most proud of: The waitress uniforms at the Crashdown Cafe, where Liz and Maria work after school. The uniforms feature tiaras with antennae and aprons designed to look like an alien head, with "eyeballs" for the pockets. Scott on 'AMC can't resist Greenlee test tampering but didn't Bo asked Dr. Josie to see if she can find out who switched his sperm test results. PASSIONS: Faith and Charity planned to move to Harmony, Christina Pickles (top left) and John Tenney (standing) play the parents of high-schoolers in Get Real on Fox. Other stars are (from left) Debrah Farentino, Eric Christian Olsen, Anne Hathaway (standing) and Jesse Eisenberg. 'Get Real7 What it's about The everyday ups and downs of the Green family Mitch and Mary, and their three high-schoolers Meghan, Cameron and Kenny. Where you can see it 9 p.m. Wednesdays on Fox Who's the designer Kathleen Detoro (previous credits include Scream 2) What we can expect from the clothes: "As the name implies, we are doing what we like to think of as realistic or even hyper-real," Detoro says. "Because we are reality-based, we're going to places where kids really would shop." Places such as Urban Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters and J. Crew. That will help the show play in Peoria. "We want to be a little ahead, but we want it to make sense. We want it to be understandable to everyone, so we're not just catering to Los Angeles." The character to watch: Meghan, a valedictorian who isn't sold on college. Detoro crafted a completely individual look for Meghan, shying away from anything trendy and using a variety of silhouettes and saturated colors. And black, "which is kind of unusual for television." What we can expect from the accessories: Lots of beads and a mother lode of silver. "We tried to be innovative with Meghan's jewelry and how it's worn" because teenagers love to see different bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Her footwear also steps off the beaten path lowtop, black Converse sneakers and low-heeled, round-toed boots. Special considerations: "We have some very interesting camera angles and unique camera moves that we use, so we will get a foot or a hand or an arm or a bracelet (in close-up). That's why I try to put as much effort as possible into the overall picture." Where she gets her inspiration: "I'm just constantly looking at people and what they're wearing and what works. And that's how you come up with something interesting." Malls are the obvious starting point; Detoro calls them "the great playground of America for teenagers." while Tabitha vowed to destroy them both. Mor-phing into a dog, Tabitha confronted a terrified Faith ill the mysterious "Cobra," Karen, Joe and Scott planted a monitoring device in DVs hotel room in hopes of finding out what he is up to. .. SUNSET BEACH: Xaitlin, who wants Trey back, learned Olivia can't be declared an unfit mother unless she abuses Trey, or if she has a drug problem. Olivia and Cole went to London to see Uncle Tobias about Gregory's will. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Mac and Raul were arrested for underage drinking along with Billy and his pals when they tried to break up his Labor Day party. In India, Kay and Paul learned they should meet up with Brock very soon. Tricia and Ryan were devastated when she lost their baby. in her home. Faith struggled with Tabitha after she morphed back into her human form. PORT CHARLES: Rachel failed to keep Kevin from taking Victor home from the hospital. To protect Kevin, Eve and Scott, Victor lied that he knows nothing about TsO OFF ALL PROGRAMS!! I. Lose 2-5 lbs. a week I Unlimited office visits ' I I Eat grocery store food . . , I Individualized programs Personal supervision .J By Nancy M. Rekhantt Special to The Palm Beach Post ALL MY CHILDREN: After finding Dimitri's coffin was empty, David and Edmund confronted Alex, who revealed Dimitri is alive. Becca admitted that she is sexually inexperienced. Scott found it hard to resist Greenlee's sexual advances. AS THE WORLD TURNS: To get to Hope, David (Reid) knocked lily out, then struck Denise with a baseball bat Denise was hospitalized with a head injury. Lucinda tailed Molly, who told David (Reid) that Lucinda had no proof Reid is David. David's (Reid) plan to kill Molly and Lucinda was thwarted when Lucinda pulled a gun on him. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL: Kimberly defended Rick when Giovanni criticized him for staying with Amber. Demanding that Becky return Baby Eric, Amber pointed out how she can give the baby everything he will ever need, while Becky would have to struggle to support the child. DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Sami suspects Lucas or Kate paid Nicole to marry Lucas. Kate hid her jealousy when she learned Nicholas made a date with Billie. Victor told a surprised Kate that he is following Nicholas' advice to get his life back. Carrie denied she intends to go after Austin. GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jerry, who was driving, underwent surgery after crashing the car he and Bobbie were riding in. After regaining consciousness, Jerry asked Bobbie to marry him, then suddenly had a seizure. Because of the accident, Carly realized how much she loves Bobbie. GUIDING LIGHT: Richard rescued Josh, who was trapped in the cave after he saved Reva's life. Reva was reunited with her son, Jonathan, after Cassie talked Olivia into bringing the boy to Reva and Richard. Josh told Reva he would return to Springfield without her. ONE LIFE TO LIVE: After patching things up with Bo, Lindsay begged Sam not to tell Bo that she changed his sperm test results.
