"That gave me even more motivation to go out and get the job done," said McNair, who finished 21-of-32 for 341 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. "I don't understand it . . . but the team surrounded me and said, 'Don't worry.' " "The guy was having a great game," tight end Frank Wycheck said. "I don't know how they justified booing a player like that." Cincinnati's Jeff Blake ran for 90 yards and threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game with heat exhaustion and cramps. Rookie Akili Smith, who held out most of training camp, finished off two of Blake's drives, going l-for-2 for 11 yards and settling for field goals. Scott Covington, a rookie out of the University of Miami, played a set of downs, completing one pass for 4 yards. "He had 27 more practices than Akili did," Cincinnati coach Bruce Coslet said. Lions 28, Seahawks 20: In their first game without Barry Sanders, visiting Detroit also lost Herman Moore but won the game to spoil Mike Holmgren's debut. Playing most of the game without Moore, Charlie Batch threw three touchdown passes. Moore sprained his left knee when he fell awkwardly after being hit by guard Tony Semple in the first quarter. Moore, who will have a MRI exam today in Detroit, is expected to be out for about four weeks. Moore's streak of 107 straight games with a catch ended. "Everybody in the world thought they (the Sea-hawks) would win the ball game," Batch said. "I think it's a shock for everyone. But it wasn't a shock for us." B Bears 20, Chiefs 17: Together, Shane Matthews and Dick Jauron proved to be a potent combination for the Chicago Bears. Matthews, a former University of Florida star, threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start and Jauron, the rookie coach, got his first victory, beating visiting Kansas City. " . "I think we proved some people wrong today," Matthews said. "It's a long season and we've got a long way to go, but we've got the weapons." Curtis Enis somersaulted into the end zone for his first career TD and gained 133 yards of total offense. Nine receivers caught passes. Chicago scored on all four of its first-half possessions. And Cade McNown even got into it, going 6-of-9 for 77 yards. "They play razzle-dazzle football," said Chiefs rookie coach Gunther Cunningham, who also interviewed for the Bears' job. "But after you get used to it, once you see it on film, once a game's played like this, now you know what they're all about. It's not confusing." B Rams 27, Ravens 10: Kurt Warner threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start and host St. Louis spoiled the coaching debut of Baltimore's Brian Billick. Warner, who has played on teams from the Iowa Barnstormers to the Amsterdam Admirals, became the starter when Trent Green was lost for the year with a knee injury in the pre-season. , "I know this is the NFL and a lot of people want to make it a big deal," Warner said. "But I've played football a longtime and I felt like I was just playing another game out there." Warner led the Rams to a 17-3 halftime lead, going 18-for-25 for 174 yards and throwing touchdown passes of 6 yards to Rodney Williams and 2 yards to Isaac Bruce. His production dropped in the second half and he finished 28-for-44. Tupa, Mirer replace Testaverde JETS From ICC Testaverde went down with 7:12 left in the second quarter with the Jets trailing by 10-7. He made a handoff to back Curtis Martin, Martin was stripped behind the line of scrimmage by Willie McGinest and the ball bounced near the Patriots' 25. As Martin dived for the ball, Testaverde spun and tried diving for it Martin got it. Testaverde wound up writhing in pain. Snap. Tom Tupa (6-for-10 for 165 yards with two touchdown passes) entered, and on his first play threw a 25yard TD pass to Johnson. The Jets were ahead, 14-10, and then 16-10 on a safety. But at halftime the reality of what had happened to the Jets must have sunk in. The Jets played the third quarter in a funk. The Patriots began blitzing Tupa. Tupa had been inserted because the Jets could not have used quarterback Rick Mirer without losing Tupa for the rest of the game, according to league rules concerning ' a team's three quarterbacks. That rule is waived at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Tupa played all of the third. In the third quarter, the Jets were blitzed by 17-0 before answering. They would take the lead, But Chris Slade intercepted a Mirer pass with 3:39 left and the Patriots converted with the go-ahead field goal.
