They love all this plus the informality of Jife in South Florida no need to bother with jackets, ties and other shackles of civilization. They like being able to wander out into the garden in pajamas when they get up without passersby raising eyebrows. What they miss, of course, is their wine. And it is no use telling them that California and New York produce some excellent wines. They will not, just cannot, believe it. To the French, there is only one country which produces wines worthy of their palates France. One can, perhaps, understand their attitude toward wine. But it is different when it comes to water. Americans, and to some extent the British, have an obsession about water. They are brought up to believe that only in their own countries is it drinkable and that when traveling abroad, it should be avoided like the plague. Drink beer, wine, spirits, anything, but leave the water alone. Or, if you must drink it, boil it first. But the French usually do not share their fears. It came as a shock, therefore, when a young French lady who stayed with us took one sip of water and then resolutely refused to touch it during the rest of her stay. She would have crystal water, mineral water, but never again tap water. And that wasn't the only surprise. Two children from France the land of the delectable croissant and the crusty, yard-long loaf developed a passion for American bread, which many people here would say has the flavor and consistency of cotton wool. Well, there's no accounting for taste. Or, as the French would say, chacun a son gout. They all want to come back, of course, and not least of all the children. And for them, it is not so much to revisit Disney World and Lion Country Safari or even go to the beach. It's to have some more of that delicious American bread. By CHRISTOPHER GROGAN Special to The Post The French really are coming, and in ever-increasing numbers. Each year, we hear more French spoken in South Florida. And it is not just the French of Canada. It is the French of Paris, Bordeaux and Lyons as well. The people who were always the stay-at-homes of the world firm believers that everything which makes life worthwhile could be found within the borders of la Belle France have at last taken to the road. Because my wife Odile is French, our house guests are nearly all French, and it is amusing to reflect on their reactions to life in South Florida. Tourists unlike immigrants who see everything through the jaundiced eye of nostalgia come to enjoy themselves. They are quick to praise and slow to criticize. And there isn't much they find wrong with life here. What is most appreciated, perhaps, is the sense of spaciousness. Wherever the European decides to go in Europe, he finds thousand of others with the same idea. For him, the beaches of Florida are pure joy, mile upon mile not just of golden sand, but of a much more precious commodity emptiness. Even at the busiest times in the busiest places, they are not crowded as compared with the French Riviera. There, not only do you have to pay for the privilege of going to the beach, but all you get for it is a small portion of sand where you sit cheek by jowl with your neighbor in a seething mass of humanity. But it is not just the beaches that offer the luxury of space. The same is true of just about everything restaurants, theaters and stores, too. Our guests love to go shopping, but not necessarily in the attractive boutiques on and off Worth Avenue. Shops like those abound in France; they prefer the huge supermarkets and department stores, where they can wander around at their leisure and pause to admire or reflect with Save $4 to $6 Fleece Or Pile Robes ... But nostalgia on CBS lost out to innovation on ABC Wednesday night. The George Burns special was seen in only 14.1 million homes, compared with 20.2 million for "Charlie's Angels." The Ted Knight special on CBS also did poorly, appearing in the bottom 10 shows. The week's top 10 shows were "Happy Days," ABC, which had an audience in 22.1 million homes; "La-verne & Shirley," ABC, 21.6 million; "Charlie's Angels," 20.2 million; "Bing Crosby," CBS, 20.1; "Frosty Wonderland," ABC, 20.0; "Smash-up on Interstate 5," ABC's "Friday Night Movie," 19.8 million; "MASH," CBS, 19.7 million; "Rudolph," CBS, 19.4 million; "All In the Family," CBS, 19.4 million, and "Welcome Back, Kotter," 19.2 Sale! The week's lowest-rated show was an NBC documentary, "The Sometime Soldiers," seen in 6.2 million homes. The average national ratings for the week put ABC in first place again, with NBC remaining in the third spot for the second week in a row after three weeks at the top. ABC had a 21.1 average rating, meaning viewers in 15.1 million homes watched the network; CBS posted 19 1, or 13.6 million, and NBC, 18.7, or 13.3 million. Specials fared well during the week, with "Bing Crosby's Christmas," "Frosty-Winter Wonderland" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" appearing in the top 10 shows.
