Palm Beach Post, Wednesday, December 8, 1976 E5 Blackman Returns To Ivy. Promises Wins at Cornell MECHANICAL SERVICE AVAILABLE 'TIL 9 P.M. MON. THRU SAT. Rouadup of Fame. The inductions were part of the National football foundation's 19th annual awards banquet . . . Wayne Howard, Cal State Long Beach's winningest football coach, resigned to take the head coaching post at the University of Utah. In 1974, Howard took over a 49er team that had gone 1-9-1 the previous season. He turned the team into a winner, finishing 6-5 in his first season. His career record at Long Beach State was 23-10. . . Florida head football coach Doug Dickey reportedly is one of those being considered for the head coaching job at the University of Arkansas, but Dickey said flatly he has no intentions of leaving the Gators. BOXING - British middleweight champ Alan Minter scored a surprise victory over world-rated Sugar Ray Seales when the referee stopped the fight in the fifth round at London's Royal Albert Hall. Minter appeared beaten until he produced a tremendous right to floor the 1972 Olympic champion halfway through the fifth round. 40 off! The 58-year-old Blackman signed a multi-year contract as head coach of Cornell after spending the last six seasons as head coach of Illinois. During his 16 years at Dartmouth from 1955-70, Blackman's clubs won more games and championships than any school in the history of the Ivy League. "I'm happy to be back in the Ivy League," said Blackman, "and I can't think of a place I'd rather be at than Cornell. The happiest years of my life were spent at Dartmouth. The one thing I like best about the Ivy League is that football is kept in its proper perspective. It is only one part of the overall program ... but an important one, I feel. "It is not going to be an overnight thing, but Cornell will have a winning program. I guarantee it." Blackman's task in rebuilding the Big Red will be a difficult one. Cornell has won only three games and lost 15 in the last two seasons and has had only four winning seasons in the last 10 years. Athletic Director Dick Shultz chose Blackman over several other candidates because of Blackman's excellent record. "Blackman has rejuvenated every football team he's ever coached, and I believe he is the best man to rebuild Cornell's program," Shultz low r 1000 raised! A78-13 tbls. "I'm delighted he would accept this challenge. I told him that this job would be no retirement job, that I was fully committed to bringing a winning program to Cornell. It took me just 45 seconds of conversation with him to realize, that despite his age, he still had plenty of fire in his furnace." MORE FOOTBALL - George Mira, whose professional quarter-backing career has spanned three leagues, said if the University of Miami can't recruit a "big name" coach, he'd like to try rebuilding the Hurricanes' football program. Mira admitted he was short of coaching experience, but said he didn't believe it would hurt him . . . New York Jets' head coach Lou Holtz reportedly is considering an offer to become head football coach at the University of Arkansas. Any decision is not expected to be made until after the Jets' last game Sunday. Holtz reportedly was scheduled to visit Arkansas to speak with Razor-back Athletic Director Frank Broyles, who resigned as head coach Saturday . . . In fact, they're still angry at Pittsburgh. It is a popular notion in Oakland that this talk began with the Steelers when, in fact, it was widespread and spontaneous. The subject came up once or twice around here, as I recall, with no prodding from points north. "The fact that the Steelers were watching the game on television and rooting for us kind of burned me up, to be honest," offensive tackle John Vella said after the game. "This one was for the people of Pittsburgh. Merry Christmas, Pittsburgh. Maybe we can give you a present Christmas weekend, Pittsburgh," veteran guard Gene Upshaw bitterly said after the game. All the logistics haven't been settled. Pittsburgh must defeat Houston this weekend to cap its brilliant return from extinction. And either Baltimore or New England could wind up the wild card, thus affecting which one will be the home team in the first round and which will spend the playoffs on the road. But if things go as expected a very large if where the National Football League is concerned New England will be at Oakland and Pittsburgh will be at Baltimore for the opening round of the American Conference playoff. In the event you are confident another epic Oakland-Pittsburgh confrontation is inevitable in the conference finals, remember that New England defused the Raiders, 48-17, the fourth weekend of the sea Sat 9-6 Wards brake installation special 4 DRUMS 2 DISC. 2 DRUMS 2988 3988 maintenance-free energy system 60 LABOR ONLY MOST U.S. CARS LABOR ONLV MOST U S CARS OUR REG. 50 95 Southdale Shopping Canter 804 Southern Blvd. W.P.B. "While we think there won't be any serious problems in regard to his (Matthews) contract, we still don't know where we stand." "I am being castigated," said Ted Turner, owner of the Braves. "I feel convicted already. When I see Kuhn and (baseball attorney) Sandy Had-don, they look at me like I'm a dead man. I have as much chance in this thing as Czechoslovakia did against Hitler." It was not known when Kuhn might make a decision on the Matthews situation, but at least a half-dozen clubs, particularly the Giants, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, were hopeful that the commissioner would rule the contract void, throwing the power-hitting outfielder up for grabs once again. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians were all making overtures for Oliver, who hit .323 last season and was on his way toward the National League batting title before being sidelined with an inner ear ailment. "I sure don't want to give up Oliver. He's one of the 'few pure hitters in baseball," said new Pirates Manager Chuck Tanner.
