E4-Palm Beach Post. Wednesday, December 8, 1976 McKay 10 Players Short of Winning Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder it? By MICKEY HERSKOWITZ And STEVE PERKINS Q - John McKay came into the NFL saying there wasn't much difference between college and pro ball because, at both levels, you had to score to win. Now what does the wise guy say about all those Tampa Bay shutouts? - Bill Geisler, St. Louis. A - Despite his winless record, McKay feels he is only 10 solid football players away from being a winner rather than a loser. As Hot Line said he would weeks ago, he has signed ex-USC star Anthony Davis, who caped from Canada. McKay says he will take Ricky Bell if Tampa has first pick in the draft, a status about which there seems little doubt. As McKay said recently, "This team needs people who can make big plays. If we made a big play this season I was in the bathroom when it happened." Q - What has happened to one of my favorite players, Howard Twilley of the Miami Dolphins? Is this the year that time ing his best years with the Yankees because the fans wouldn't leave him alone in public. Is there any way they can protect their privacy without being rude? Neal Praeger, Muncie, Ind. A - Home-run king Henry Aaron found a way. During the last three years of his baseball career, starting with the season he broke Babe Ruth's career record, Aaron led a dual identity. On the road, his teams, the Atlanta Braves and then the Milwaukee Brewers, rented two rooms for him - one empty and registered in Aaron's name. The other room, listed under the name of Bill Suber, was where Henry slept. He was driven to that subterfuge by the phone calls and knocks on his hotel door that kept him awake. The name was a variation of his wife's maiden name, Billye Suber. (Do you have a question about a sports personality? Send your questions to Sports Hot Line, care of The Palm Beach Post. Because of the volume of mail, personal replies are not possible. St. Louis Favored In Finale thereafter, the 5-foot-10 receiver had to fight for a job and for the recognition he deserved. "I've got one advantage," he said, as he entered his 12th season. "When you're as slow as I am you don't lose any steps as you grow older." Q How do famous athletes cope with the constant demands, the intrusions of people who pursue them in restaurants and at their hotels? I read once that Mickey Mantle had to take all his meals from room service dur and the competition finally caught up with him? - Ollie Flanders, Little Rock. A - Injuries caught up with Twilley, one of the most underrated players over a long period of years in the NFL. He tore a ligament against the Patriots, underwent surgery and faces the end of his career as the last original Dolphin. But don't count him out. Twilley was limping from a knee operation when he went to his first Dolphin camp in 1966 as a rookie out of Tulsa. Every year Portland Routs Knicks, 111-94 LAS VEGAS On the surface, The Game for this weekend matches George Allen's ancient Washington warriors with the Dallas Cowboys late Sunday afternoon. But it could turn out about as significant as a cocktail party for Henry Kissinger next February. If St. Louis loses to the New York Giants earlier in the day, the Redskins will be assured of a wild-card playoff berth. And don't look now, but the Giants have been very tough during the past month, with close losses in Dallas and Denver and successes over Washington, Seattle and Detroit. Right now I make it St. Louis by 6, but the Giants won't be patsies for the Cards. Meanwhile, the Cowboys and Minnesota are vying for the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and the Vikings have an appointment in Miami Saturday. Dolphins' head man Don Shula has indicated he is leaning toward Bob Griese as his quarterback despite Don Strock's big-play performance in a 45-point effort against Buffalo. Griese has had the injury-plagued Dolphins in contention against some formidable entries, such as Los Angeles, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, while engineering a victory over New England. And Freddie Solomon, after shaking off early-season surgery, has become a game-breaker. I make Minnesota a three-point favorite, but Miami could salvage a spoiler's bounty from an otherwise dismal season. Using the number of victories to decide the home teams in the playoffs has added spice to what used to be a dull wrapup to the NFL season. Even with a division title clinched, teams won't let up for fear of losing the 3-point advantage that comes with familiar surroundings and home cookin'. Here's how I see all this weekend's pro matchups: Saturday Pittsburgh 11 over Houston, Minnesota 3 over Miami, Los Angeles 7 over Detroit. Sunday Cincinnati 15 over N.Y. Jets, St. Louis 6 over N.Y. Giants, Philadelphia 7 over Seattle, New England 20 over Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Green Bay even, San Francisco and New Orleans even, Chicago 4 over Denver, Baltimore 17 over Buffalo, Cleveland 3 over Kansas City, Dallas 7 over Washington, Oakland 13 over San Diego. With 24 seconds to play, McAdoo missed two free throws and the Pacers got the rebound. INDIANA (107) - Hlllman 4-3-11, Jones 6-2-14, Roundfleld 2-1-5, Buse 4-4-12, Knight 4-3-11, Green 10-4-24, Robisch 6-1-20, Flynn 2-1-5, Lewis 1-0-2, Bennett 1-1-3, Anderson 0. Totals 40-27-107. BUFFALO (103) - McAdoo 13-16-42, Dantley 0-2-2, Shumate 4-6-18, Smith 6-4-16, DIGre-oorlo 0, Adams 3-4-10, McMillan 2-1-5, Averltt 2-2-6, Price 1-0-2, Foster 1-0-2, Terry 0. Totals 34-35-103. Indiana 25 24 21 30-107 Buffilo 25 19 21 31-103 Solomon Wins, Gets Closer To Semifinals HOUSTON (AP) - Harold Solomon, who stirred some controversy in the first night of the Grand Prix Masters Tennis Tournament, apparently won a spot in the tourney semifinals last night by crushing Raul Ramirez, who had ended the year as the Grand Prix point champion. Solomon won, 6-2, 6-2. The victory was the second for Solomon, and he has one more match to go in the round robin of his division. Ramirez, now with two defeats, appears to have no chance to make the semifinal round and bid for the $40,000 first-place money. Currently, Solomon is the only one of the eight players in this tournament with a perfect record. In later games last night, Roscoe Tanner of Charleston, S.C., met Manuel Orantes of Argentina, and Eddie Dibbs of Miami takes on Wojtek Fibak of Poland. Solomon lodged a strong protest Sunday night about the use of a 20-15-foot television screen at each end of The Summit Arena. He said the screens broke his concentration and demanded they be turned off. His request was granted. From Post Wlro Sorvlcoi NEW YORK - Maurice Lucas topped a balanced Portland attack with 22 points last night in leading the Trail Blazers to their fifth consecutive National Basketball Association victory, a 111-94 rout of the New York Knicks. Lionel Hollins added 20 points for the Blazers, Lloyd Neal scored 17, Bill Walton had 16 and Johnny Davis contributed 15. The Blazers took a 45-39 halftime lead by scoring the last six points in the second quarter. The Knicks hit just 15 of 50 field goal attempts in the half, a dismal .300 percentage, as Walton blocked three shots and intimidated New York shooters on a number of other tries. Portland then broke the game open by outscoring New York 36-22 in the third quarter, including a run of 11 straight points late in the period that built the lead to 21 points. Lucas scored nine points and Walton eight in the third period. The Knicks could come no closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter as they went down to their sixth defeat in their last seven games. Spencer Haywood and Earl Monroe led New York with 17 points each. PORTLAND (111) - Gross 1-1-3; Lucas 7-0-22; Walton 1-0-16; Hollins 9-2-20; Twardilk 2-0-4; Gilliam 4-0-1; Steele 1-0-2; Neal 4-3-17; Davis 5-5-15; Walker 1-0-2; Calhoun 1-0-2; Jones 0; Totals 45-21-111. Dave Robisch got the clutch points for the Pacers. He scored on a rebound with 1:02 to play that put the Pacers on top to stay at 102-101. AP Wlrophoto Linesman D'Amico Intervenes in St. Louis Blues-New York Islanders Battle Bailey Paces Capitals' Win From Pott Wlro Sorvlcti LANDOVER, Md. - Ace Bailey scored Washington's third power play goal of the game with 2:34 left, giving the Capitals a 4-3 decision over the Vancouver Canucks last night. Bailey scored on a scramble in front of Vancouver goalie Curt Ridley for his eighth tally of the year. The Caps had scored only eight power play goals previous to yesterday's game. The game appeared destined for a tie after Gary Monahan's second goal of the game at 3:03 of the third period. Monahan eluded the Wash ington defense to wrist a 15-footer past goalie Ron Low just 12 seconds after a penalty to the Capitals' Rick Green evened the sides at three men each. Penguins, 6-2 PITTSBURGH - Center Ron Shock scored two goals to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars. Schock, who failed to score since the opening game of the season, broke a 25-game, goal-less drought with two goals, 37 seconds apart, midway through the third period. Both goals were set up by passes from linemates Mike Corrigan and Rick Kehoe. Islanders, 4-2 UNIONDALE, N.J. - Clark Gillies and J. P. Parise scored goals less than three minutes apart early in the third period to give th New York Islanders a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Gillies tied the game, 2-2, when he batted in a Bob Bourne rebound at 1 : 30 of the period, and Parise scored the game-winner on the rebound of a Jean Potvin shot with five seconds left on a hooking penalty against the Blues' Garry Unger. r Biscayne Dog Racing Scores Standings Results The Clipboard Ent Colorado at Los Angeles Monday's Result Montreal I, Cleveland 0 WHA Eastern Division Sports on the Air None scheduled Football NFL AMERICAN CONFERENCE Eastern Division 25; 157 - Lewis (FP) def.
