The explanation is that a large amount of taste IS smell. Sweet, sour, salt and bitter are true tastes. The c-M or smoothness of ice cream rr.d the heat of coffee depend on touch, and are not tastes at all. But the fiavor of the ice cream and the aroma of the coffee are matters cf smell; for there is a passage from the back of the mouth to the back of thenose, and through it one smells while eating.
