TENNIS - Jimmy Connors is going home for the holidays to rest and recover from injuries suffered this year, the No. 1 player said. J. i lrfl J Pn if I 1 yqgjfr V- 1 Mi lami From Dl- From Post Wirt Services First-year Washington State coach Jackie Sherrill is resigning his job to return to top-ranked Pittsburgh succeeding Johnny Majors as head coach, a Pitt spokesman announced last night. Sherrill, former Pitt defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for three years under Majors, was to announce his decision at a news conference at the Pullman, Wash., campus a few minutes after Pitt sports information director Dean Billick announced it. Billick said Sherrill would give a news conference today at a suburban Greentree hotel. Sherrill, 33, signed a five-year contract and planned to ask Majors' permission to talk with the present Pitt coaching staff, apparently hoping to keep as many as possible "onboard." "It is an excellent staff and has done a great job for Pitt," Sherrill said in remarks released here. MORE FOOTBALL - Bob Griese will start at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in Saturday's season-ending game with Minnesota in the Orange Bowl, head coach Don Shula said. Griese was on the sidelines Sunday when Shula started Don Strock. BOXING - Ken Norton and Duane Bobick met in New York to formally announce that their on-and-off heavyweight fight is on again, probably in February in Madison Square Garden. Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali reportedly was ready to fight Bobick, but again yesterday told a press conference, "I'm through with boxing. I've done everything I can. I'm just too great to hang around and end up on my back. One hundred million dollars can't get me back into the ring." . . . A IVt year prison sentence hanging over middlewieght champion Carolhanging over middleweight champion Carlos Monzon was lifted by an appeals court in Buenos Aires. The court overturned the decision of a lower court sentencing Monzon for Today's Games Suncoast at Palm Beach Gardens, 8 Glades Central at Lake Worth, 8 Twin Lakes at North Shore, Atlantic at Pahokee, 8 Jupiter at Okeechobee, 8 Leonard at Martin County, 8 Cardinal Newman at Cardinal Gibbons, 8 Jupiter Christian at Broward Christian Boca Academy at Miami Lear, 8 PB Academy at Berean Christian, 8 Belie Glade Christian at King's, 8 Thursday's Games Vero Beach St. Edward's at Palm Beach Academy, 3:30 Classroom at Miami Northwest Christian, 8 Lake Worth Christian at South Academy, 8 Scores Standings Results Sports on the Air None scheduled Football NFL American Conference Eastern Division W L TPct. y-Baltimore 10 3 0 .769 y-New England 10 3 0 .769 Miami 6 7 0 .462 N.Y. Unfortunately, Houston gained 357 and the UM's opponents ran up 3,569 yards, also a record. Green issued a prepared statement, explaining the apparently callous manner in which he got rid of Selmer. He said he had intended to tell him officially yesterday, but when word leaked out last Friday, the only thing to do was call Selmer and tell him. Thus did Selmer learn of his demise at a World Hockey Association game. Bitter, he flew home and criticized his staff, accusing defensive coach Jim Walden of being disloyal. "Selmer was head football coach," said Green. "If he had problems underneath ... it was his job to deal with the problem and make a change. It wasn't my job to go below the head coach's level."
