It was the first home loss for the defending NCAA champions in three years and marked the first time in four years they have lost two games in a row. Kentucky is now 3-0, while Indiana, coming off a 59-57 loss to Toledo, dropped to 1-2. After an early basket by 6foot-ll, All-American center Kent Benson, Indiana went nearly seven minutes without another field goal, and errors hurt the Hoosiers throughout the game. Even with Kentucky's big men, Rick Robey and Mike Phillips, both 6-10, on the bench in foul trouble, the Wildcats still dominated. Kentucky never trailed after breaking a 2-2 lie and building a 36-15 advantage late in the first period. Indiana could get no closer than 13 points several times in the second half. Benson led the Hoosiers with 21 points, while Jack Givens added 18 for the Wildcats. KENTUCKY (66) - Givens 7-4-18, Robey 1-2-4, Phillips 1-0-2, Johnson 6-8-20, Shidler 8-4-20, Lee 1-0-2. Louisville, 2-1, took solid control early in the first half after the visitors had fought to a 9-8 lead with 15: 34 to play. Williams hit three short jumpers during a 14-0 run that put the Cardinals in command 22-19 at 12:14 before intermission. Forward Wesley Cox and guard Phillip Bond, who later set a school career assist record, each added four points during Louisville's splurge. Cox capped the run with a stuff shot after a midcourt steal. Freshman Darryll Griffith had 17 points for Louisville in a reserve role while Cox added 14 and Bond 12. Ron Watson had 6 for the losers. "I figured I had a good chance of reaching it in this game." Towle's continuing development and that of people who otherwise probably would not have had an opportunity has to console Shula after Saturday when the curtain falls on this, his longest season. much of his time to frustrating same. "Miami's defense," Simpson said, "is a lot like ours in that they were forced to use a lot of young players. They are just learning the game but they have a lot of potential. "Their middle linebacker, Steve Towle, is one heck of a football player. He's going to be a terror in another couple of seasons." Better than Nick Buoniconti? "Nick has played what, 15 years? (14). During that time he's been one of the greatest. He was the anchor of Miami's No-Name defense which I think was one of the best in the history of football. "Nick is 35 now and maybe a step slower than he used to be but you can't compare a second-year man with a Nick Buoniconti in his prime. Towle might get there. Only time will establish that. But right now, he's a heck of a football player in his own right and it wouldn't be fair to compare him with Nick at this stage of his career." Simpson didn't realize he was near his second straight 200-plus yard game until late in the contest when it was mentioned on the bench. "You don't keep track of such things in the heat of a game," he said. "You're just trying to do what you can." In contrast, Towle knew just where he was in relation to 200 tackles. He set that as a goal before the season and kept track of his defensive statistics as the campaign ! .-fiU t 0 . 1 WEST PALM BEACH- 405 N. In the second race, a customer refused to take the $200 worth of tickets, claiming Cantatore had punched the wrong numbers. The part-time clerk couldn't find anybody else to take the tickets and faced a $200 loss. But four of the tickets were on the 8-11 combination, which returned $431 for $2.00. So Cantatore went home the winner of $8,620, less the $160 for the 16 losing tickets. Great Business, the number 8 horse, won the race and paid $55.60. The second horse, number 11 Hand Combat, returned $3.40 and $1.00. mU.Y-BPWINCfWtO RICHARD frWm Auto Centres L fj WDM BLERflS II 1 1 $?lfiMfor$119 r-1"' V i rOik I lit M I I CB7B.U. t8 14, H8 14, GK7B 14.
