St. Eustatius -Try to top this at other Caribbean islands: Snorkeling amid the ruins of a 250-year-old sunken city. The old stone walls, which look like an ancient Roman city, start on the black volcanic sand of Smoke Alley Beach and descend underwater for 100 yards. Very spooky. The submerged buildings houses and warehouses once belonged to the richest port in the Caribbean. But that ended Nov. 16, 1776, when the island was the first nation to formally recognize the new United States of America. Fort Oranje fired an 1 1-gun salute to a U.S. brig. And, in 1781, British Adm. George Rodney captured St. Fustatius in retaliation. This 11.8-square-mile Dutch island is not on most people's itinerary, which is good news for anyone who wauls to explore an untrampled Caribbean. "Statia" is a place to get lost, to do nothing more than sit on a balcony and watch freighters and sailboats pass; to hike up through the rain forest on the sides of the 2,000-foot volcano named the Quill; and to explore the excellent Historical Foundation Museum, once the home of Adm.
