Bonaire Curacao Trinidad You'll need your Ray-Bans on the blind-ingly white sand beaches of St. Martin and St. Barts. In St. Eustatius, you can walk among the ruins of a 200-year-old town on a black volcanic sand beach. And Saba has no beaches at all. There are islands where you can spend a week gambling at a different casino every day St. Maarten has eight. Islands such as St. John have few attractions built by human hands but many natural wonders. The West Indies have entranced explorers and have been fought over by faraway governments. Their personalities and terrain are as different as the countries that settled them. The banana-shaped crescent of islands, more than 2,000 miles long, form a fragile border between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea on the west and the often fierce Atlantic Ocean on the east. In our first Islands magazine, we will take a look at a few of these islands, including those that are French, Dutch and American. We promise it will start you Caribbean dreamin'. And we'll look at the Bahamas, which isn't in the Caribbean but is much closer to home, stretching across 700 miles, from 50 miles off the coast of Florida south almost to Cuba.
