If you want to install beams at the edge of your ceiling, get special corner beams made for this purpose. They're made half width. If you like you can paint the beams. Before you do, test the paint you plan to use on one of the scraps of beam you created when cutting to length. Some paints may crawl or fail to adhere to the finish already on the beams. the House Rfihr. & Rflirs. Veinme ID)a5s haw amnmomnmced thew sepatraltnoim... as how to repair roofs, walls, basements and the endless list of things that can go wrong in a house or apartment. Have1 a crack in your ceiling you just can't seem to get rid of? There's one simple way to end your problem, and dress up your room at the same time. The secret is to install artificial ceiling beams. Put one over that troublesome crack and it's out of sight forever. Artificial beams are made of lightweight plastic foam. They are formed in molds made from real wood beams, so their texture is 100 per cent authentic. They come finished in natural wood tones. In short, they look so much like the real thing you may want to put some up, even if you don't have a ceiling crack to hide. Installation is easy. You won't even have to drive a nail. The beams are so light you can put them up with adhesive. The job of installing five or six shouldn't take more than a couple of hours at most. Start by planning the layout. Make a scale drawing of the ceiling and draw in the location of the problem crack. Plan to put one beam over the crack and then work out your pattern from there. Often a ceiling will crack right in the center. That makes your layout easy. If the crack is off center, experiment on your scale drawing. The beams needn't be evenly spaced, as long as you arrive at a symmetrical arrangement. If you are going to cover a crack, or if your ceiling isn't perfectly flat, beams with a U-shaped cross section will give the neatest installation. They fit more snugly against irregular surfaces than solid foam beams. Draw pencil lines on your ceiling to mark the location of each beam, using your scaled sketch as a guide. If the ceiling is finished with a glossy paint (likely only in the kitchen), scuff up the paint along the beam line with some sandpaper or treat the area with a liquid deglos-ser, available at paint stores. Cut beams to length with a fine-toothed saw. Work carefully to avoid chipping off the exterior finish on the beams. Try each beam for fit before you install it. Trim for a good fit; if the beam is a little long you can force it into place, but this may cause the beam to bow away from the ceiling. The adhesive to use for installation is panel adhesive. It comes in caulking gun cartridges, and you can buy it at the home center or lumberyard where you get your beams. To use it, run a bead in a serpentine pattern down the center of a solid foam beam. On U-shaped beams, run a narrow bead along each arm of the U. Press the beam against the ceiling, using your pencil line as a guide. Then pull the beam away from the ceiling to allow the adhesive to tack up a bit. When the glue gets tacky, press the beam back in place. Check along its full length for beam-to-ceiling gaps. Press these gaps out and use a board wedged between beam and floor to hold the beam as shown in the sketch, being sure to pad the beam with a scrap of wood so the brace will not dig into the soft foam. Keep the beam in place for two hours. That's it. Repeat the process with the other beams and the job is done. A few final notes: The Davis' have parted with several of their working staff. Their lawnmover, rake and snowshovel. And the other things that took so much time out of their weekends. So, the Davis' moved into Gemini Club. Now, on weekends, they can soak up the sun by the pool. Relax in the Sauna or shape up a little in the health club. Maybe join some other buffs at the tennis courts. There's even a park for picnics, or gardens to enjoy if it's not raining. Billiards, cards and social rooms if it is. They can sit back and relax in their custom decorated home and enjoy the luxury of custom quality built into each apartment. Extreme care was taken in the designing of every apartment to achieve maximum space and privacy without a feeling of confinement. And to provide spectacular views of the lntracoastal, Lake Worth, the Atlantic or the lush green of the North Palm Beach Country Club. The Davis are free to enjoy all this. Because they can use their leisure time doing what they like. Instead of spending their time repairing the house or worrying about the plumbing. Best of all, they don't have to do yardwork. Now, the Davis' couldn't ask for less mower than that, could they?
