(UPI) - Tailback Larry Isaac ran five yards for a touchdown and quarterback Rodney Allison added two more scores one on a 77-yard run to lead Texas Tech to a 24-21 win over Baylor yesterday and give the Red Raiders a share of their first Southwest Conference crown. Tech, however, had to hold off a last-minute flurry by the Bears and emerged victorious when a 48-yard field goal attempt by Lester Belrose with 28 seconds remaining fell short. The Red Raiders tied for the league title with Cotton Bowl-bound Houston. It was the first league title for Tech since it entered the league in 1960. Tech, finishing its regular season with a 10-1 record, will meet Nebraska in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl New Year's Eve. Allison ran 77 yards on the first play of the game and then gave Tech a 14-0 lead with a one-yard dive with five seconds remaining in the first period. Envious competitors say the Woods' meticulously prepared Mercury enjoys an advantage of 50-60 horsepower over other cars. "That's what a lot of people think," Pearson said. "But I'd say 75 per cent of it was handling as well as horsepower." Despite his accomplishments, Pearson says he isn't ready to quit, as is frequently rumored about this time of year. "Racing is pretty hard to get out of your blood," he said. "I haven't got it out of mine, probably won't anytime soon." The driver of the year award is sponsored by the Olsonite Corp. winning the Grand International class in the 24 Hours of Daytona sports car endurance race with his son Larry. "It was something I hadn't done before," Pearson said. Pearson hesitated for a moment before picking this year over 1973 11 victories in 22 starts as his best. "That was a pretty good one, you know," he advised. "But I'd rather tab this year because there were more superspeedway wins, and Daytona was involved." Pearson, who has won 36 superspeedway races since teaming with the Wood brothers in 1972, added, "Everything that could have been won that I hadn't won, I won. "I don't know of anyone that's done anything to top us." Pearson had high praise for the Woods, who have prepared cars for 61 superspeedway victories and one Indianapolis 500 triumph. "They've always done what I asked," he said. "If I want to try something, they'll try it. On the other hand, if they want to try something, I'll try it. If it doesn't work, we'll try something else. "And they work so hard to prepare the car and get you in and out of the pits during a race. Pearson, a 41-year-old, $1.5 million career prize winner from Spartanburg, S C., is the first two-time winner of the award based on selections by a panel of U.S. auto racing writers. He first won it in 1973. Pearson, who will be honored at a luncheon in New York Friday, finished the season with 27 points to 25 for Yarborough. A poor performance in the first quarter of the season probably cost Yarborough, who was narrowly beaten out by Bobby Unser in 1974 balloting, the award. "It's a great honor," Pearson said in a telephone interview. "Especially considering no one else has ever won it twice." Pearson won 10 of 22 starts in NASCAR Grand National racing, while Yarborough, the season champion, took nine of 30. Pearson's achievements in 1976 included victories in all of NASCAR racing's premier events, the Daytona 500, World 600 and Southern 500. It was only the second time in history one driver has won all of stock car racing's Triple crown events in a single season. Pearson said one of his biggest thrills of the season, though, was Montana State Victorious From Post Wire Services FARGO, N.D. - Freshman tight end Butch Damberger caught a touchdown pass, and freshman Jeff Muri kicked a 34-yard field goal to give Montana State a 10-3 victory over North Dakota State in the Grantland Rice Bowl yesterday. The victory advanced the Bobcats to the Pioneer Bowl in Wichita Falls, Tex., next Saturday, where they will meet Akron for the NCAA Division II national title. Akron, the No. 3-ranked team in the division, defeated No. 2 Northern Michigan, 29-26, in overtime in the Amos Alonzo Stagg bowl the other semifinal playoff game yesterday. North Dakota State made a 25-yard first quarter field goal by sophomore Mike McTague hold up for a 3-0 half time advantage. Akron, 29-26 AKRON, Ohio - Quarterback Marty Bezbatchenko squeezed over from the one yard line in overtime to bring Akron back from a three-point deficit and give the Zips a dramatic 29-26 victory over defending champion Northern Michigan yesterday in the Knute Rockne Bowl, a semifinal game of the NCAA Division II football championship. Akron's Jim Embick put the game into overtime with a 35yard field goal with one second left in regulation play. That culminated a desperation drive of 71 yards following the goahead touchdown by Northern with just 3:35 remaining. Northern Michigan got first chance from the Akron 15-yard line in the extra session and lost eight yards in three plays. Dan Harves then made it 26-23 Northern with a 39-yard field goal. Akron then got the ball at Northern's 15 and Dave Axner, who scored three touchdowns in the game, belted for 12 yards and a first down in two carries. Jim Polena put the ball inches from the goal line on the next play and Bezbatchenko then vaulted across with the winner. The victory raised Akron's season mark to 10-2. East Defeats West In Shrine Bowl CINCINNATI (AP) - Miami's Rob Carpenter rushed for 101 yards, including a 33 yard touchdown romp, to propel the East to a 24-8 victory over the West yesterday in the fifth annual All-Ohio Shrine Bowl at Riverfront Stadium. Carpenter teamed up with Youngs-town quarterback Cliff Stoudt to give the East a powerful ball-control offense that ran up a 24-0 lead early in the third quarter. It was the East's fourth victory in the five-year-old series which moved to Cincinnati this year after four years at Columbus.
