But when something like this happens, all of a sudden, you're all alone. When they roll you into the operating room, you're all alone." As he came out of the bathroom that morning, he had forgetfully put his weight on his left leg. "It felt like my leg was going to break off at the knee," he said. "But if it had happened on grass instead of that artificial surface, I think I would have been able to pull my foot free just enough to protect the knee. I was thinking last night about how I was pinned like that twice when I was with the Dolphins once in Shea Stadium against the Jets and once in Baltimore but because of the grass, I was able to pull my foot free just enough." Norm Evans, once an offensive tackle with the Dolphins and now with the Seahawks, had visited him in the Giants dressing room. "I'm going to have one of those caterpillars," Big Zonk told him, meaning the surgical scar. "I'm finally getting a caterpillar." Now, as traffic slowed in the rain on the East Side Drive, Big Zonk talked of Manny Fernandez, the Dolphins defensive tackle. "Manny's got caterpillars all over him knees, shoulders," he said. "Some day he's going to turn into a bunch of butterflies." With the Giants this season, Big Zonk ran for 569 yards, not bad for a team with a 2-10 won-lost record, but not up to his standard. "I went to see Wellington Mara a few weeks ago," he was saying of the Giants' owner. "I told him if he wasn't happy with me, I wouldn't hold him to the contract that he could lower my salary if he wanted or trade me, whatever he wanted to do. But he told me that if he knew back in April when he signed me what he knew now, he wouldn't change a thing. "Back when we lost to the Vikings before John McVay took over, Bill Arnsparger told me, 'I'm sorry I got you in this mess,' but he didn't have to say that. I called him and Don Shula when I was in Miami a couple of weeks ago. I like Bill but him being a head coach just didn't work out. Maybe it will work out for John McVay here. He's a good coach." The traffic was moving now and Big Zonk laughed when he thought about how he has teased Dick But-kus about limping. "He has an awful knee," he said. "I used to try to trip him. I'd tell him to stand up straight. He'd growl at me and tell me that sooner or later, I'd get mine. He must be chuckling now." But suddenly, Big Zonk shook his head and pounded his right fist into his left. "Damn it," he said. "I won't be able to go pheasant hunting now when I get home." By DAVE ANDERSON (c) Nw York Timtt NEW YORK - The knee. Always the knee. When the doctor holds the knee in his hands to test its stability, people around the National Football League hold their breath. Damaged ligaments are usually more serious than damaged cartilage, but surgery often is necessary for either injury. God did not make the knee for football. Joe Namath knows that. So do thousands of others. And not even Larry Csonka has escaped. He appeared indestructable Big Zonk, the 240-pound fullback who joined the New York Giants this year with a $1 million contract. Through eight seasons in pro football, Big Zonk had appeared too big and too strong to be hurt. Oh, he's had his nose broken a dozen times, and he had concussions as a rookie until he used a different helmet. He needed surgery for bone chips in his elbow and for calcium deposits in a big toe. But in the NFL, that's not really being hurt. But last Sunday his left foot was pinned against the artificial turf at Giants Stadium and in the pile up other players fell across the leg. Two torn ligaments in his left knee. But some people still did not believe that Big Zonk was really hurt. "My brother Joe kept saying on the phone, it must be a bad bruise," he recalled. "I told him, No it's ligaments.' " When his agent, Ed Keating, phoned, "Ed kept muttering, i can't believe you're seriously hurt.' " But he was. The operation is over now. Big Zonk is recuperating and looking, to next season. He's in the same room at the Hospital for Special Surgery with his teammate, Tom Mullen, the offensive tackle who also required knee surgery after Sunday's 28-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Tom Mullen entered the hospital Sunday night. . "He's always leading the way for me," Big Zonk was joking Monday on his way to the hospital, "but this is ridiculous." He had backed into the front seat of the car and slowly, painfully, swung his, stiffly bandaged left leg inside. "Pam wanted me to quit before I signed with the Giants," he was saying now about his wife. "She even mentioned that I'd been lucky not to have had a knee injury, that she thought I was overdue. But you never think you're going to get hurt until you do." His wife took their two small sons back to their Lisbon, Ohio, home after visiting him over the Thanksgiving weekend. "All his life," Big Zonk was saying now, "a football player always has people around him teammates, coaches, front-office people in the pros, teachers and guidance 0 Plus 52.11 F.E.T. and old tire. you see the Firestone sign. 30-60-90 DAYS WO INTEREST CHARGE r firestone CHRISTMAS ALBUM MnnntnH country stars Glen Campbell Pat Boone Loretta Lynn ' 'Jimmy Dean It mm iBflSU - 'r- and more!
