B6 Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, December 5, 1976 Banker Kicks Security Blanket, Finds New World Outside tr- . :: r:v . .-.,... , house there three stories of red brick, wood floors and a fireplace. No, they don't have any relatives in Charlottesville, they just thought they'd like living there. "If we don't like Charlottesville, we don't have to stay there," he said. "We look forward to living in a lot of places." That kind of freedom takes money and together, the Meltons have found a way to solve that problem. Mrs. Melton started an Amway distributorship five years ago because she needed an extra $40 a month to pay for a son's braces. Dad pitched in, much to the disdain of the board of directors at the savings and loan, he said, and he was presented with an ultimatum his position with them or his part-time job. It was an easy decision to make, he said, as he sat in his windowless office, contemplating the 19 years to go before retirement. He took a chance. Now he's happy all the time," says Mrs. Melton. The kids think he shed 10 years or more. Looking through some slides of a trip, one of the children asked recently for them to drag out the pictures of them "when he was old." The pictures were taken in 1966. The acute cluster headaches Melton used to suffer have disappeared along with the need for a several-martini prelude for dinner. Now there is time for new experiences and to learn new skills, such as photography. And for the first time, his kids want to be like Dad when they grow up. Working and traveling together has been a blessing for Mrs. Melton, who confesses her husband had outgrown her while she stayed home for 20 years raising the children and "being a household instrument." "We didn't have much in common except for the children. Now we have better things to fight about," she laughed. "Our friends thought we were crazy," Mrs. Melton says. But they aren't laughing any more. The Meltons turned a $25 investment into a $100,000-a-year business. Part of their travels include stops to hold seminars on motivation. Mrs. Melton who "five years ago couldn't lead a group in silent prayer" now speaks comfortably to an audience of 2,500. Mrs. Melton has not regretted the decision for a moment, she said. "When someone told us we couldn't run a business in our spare time, it just made me so mad," she said, expressing an anger toward the corporate life which shackled her husband's vision for so many years. "They don't want you to dream," she said. Now Melton spends a great deal of time dreaming and setting new goals. He has changed considerably, according to his family. "He used to be crabby and ugly. By DEE WHITTINGTON Poll StH Writtr BOCA RATON - At 42, C.W. (Buck) Melton Jr. was vice president and treasurer of one of the area's largest financial institutions. It took him 20 years of hard work to get there. Then sitting behiryj his desk one day, he decided to gel out, and he did. Melton chucked it all in favor of a motor home, freedom and a small business of his own. "It was a scary decision because he threw away a security blanket," says his wife, JoAnn. "But at last we had control over our own life and income and that was more important than the security." In less than a year, they have put 22,000 miles on their motor home, traveling throughout the eastern United States, taking their time, pulling off the side of the road in the mountains or checking into a ritzy hotel as the spirit moves them. When he was working 50 or 60 hours a week, Melton said he had little time to get to know his five children. Now the two youngest travel with their parents, and the three older kids join them when they can get away from college or work. "We found it was more enjoyable to make the world our home than the home our world," Melton said. To prove it, there's a for sale sign in the front yard of their University Park home. On one of the first trips they took, they fell in love with Charlottesville, Va. They just upped and bought a UYJ Serving the Palm Beaches! C.W.
