SAVE 22 Kenmore R Convertible FREE-ARM Sewing Head "We went t a tailor and he had no material but red and white satin. So he made the suit and the hat out of that. The hat was Chinese style. It fit very tight over the head," Kruse said. No matter where Kruse went, he said he never had to introduce himself to the children. U.S. military officials in the area had taught the foreign children American Christmas customs. Mrs. Kruse said, "In Saigon it was 'Pere Noel! Pere Noel! Pere Noel!' as most of the children were French-speaking". As if finding a costume wasn't difficult, Kruse had as many problems' finding reindeer. In Ethiopia, he arrived at a Christmas party by helicopter to find "Dancer and Pranc-er" to be two donkeys with antelope horns strapped to their heads. He now has the same problem in Florida. Kruse must explain to children that the Florida weather is too hot for the reindeer and he had to arrive in a Volkswagen instead. "Christmas has a different meaning here from overseas," Mrs. Kruse said. "We used to give the men things like a comb and a washcloth and the women toothpaste and a towel. They really appreciated those simple things that we think of as necessities. Still, no matter where you are, the people love the children and the children love Santa. It's the same wherever we've been." Kruse has limited his Santa appearances to friends' homes and to St. George's Episcopal Church's annual bazaar yesterday in Riviera Beach. Still, he will make 22 visits in the Tequesta area on Christmas Eve as Santa Claus. By ROBERT BURNS Post Stall Writer TEQUESTA - Pere Noel, Father Christmas or Santa Claus they all spell Charles Kruse's name. Kruse has been Santa Claus since a Sunday school play in Peewaukee, Wis., many years ago and has played Saigon, Bangkok, Taiwan and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the years since. "We've been Santa Claus wherever we've been," Mrs. Kruse said. "In Wisconsin, we would start out at 4 p.m. at a hospital and end up in Green Bay at midnight." Kruse worked with the State Department from 1956-59 as a radio and motion picture adviser to various governments. He hasn't always had his Santa costume along with him, but he made do with what he had. "The first time I was Santa Claus at an embassy party in Ethiopia, we couldn't find any spirit gum to glue on my beard," Kruse said. "This fellow who worked in my darkroom, Ato Gebayu Haddis was his name, got some resin and we dissolved it in alcohol and ether for the gum. "You've heard of frankincense and myrrh? Well Ato went out and got the resin out of a gum tree. That was frankincense," Kruse said. Christmas 1965 found Kruse in Saigon without his Santa suit. "The girls in the embassy came over and said, 'Oh Santa Claus, you've got to go to the hospital in Cho Lon, there are so many children there,' " Kruse said. "Since I had no suit, I got in touch with a friend of mine in Washington, and asked him to send me a Santa Claus beard and I would get a tailor in Saigon to make the suit," he said. ft ft Kenmore Mrfifh ( l c h f 1 1 1 o n . . ju-l dial the unf um Mttnl' with Ruilt-in Huttonholer ' i I ..V .
