From present appearances it looks as though the sun of peace ing to keep up the agitation. We are not a savage and brutal people; we are kind and humane to the negro, and. more than that we know him. He is not capable of government and the intelligent people of the South will not permit themselves to be dominad by him. Any attempt to force him forward by Federal legislation will result to bis own disadvantage, and to the injury of the person that attempts it "Let us alone and we will take care of him.

He is the laborer of the South as necessary to the welfare of the eection as such as is the labor in the factories in the North. We have no inclination and cannot afford to oppress or ill-treat him. Norwood assented. At a meeting of shipowners this afternoon a committee was appointed to confer with a oommittee of the dock officials, in accordance wiiu Mr. Norwood's suggestion. The dock official state that now they have at work a greater number of men than at any time since the commencement of the strike, and that they do not propose to make any concessions. The result of this conference destroys the chance for arriving at a settlement of the strike to-day and embitters the feeling of the men.

Special to The Times -Democrat. Memphis, Sept 8. Berry H. Bin-ford, who vaa the youngest soldier in the Confederate army, died yesterday while on a business trip to Monroe, La. His father.

Dr. Binford, was a surgeon in the Confederate army. The boy, when about nine years old, started out to find Lis father and reported to Oen. Wheeler, who took him for a Federal spy sent in by some of the Union people. The General kept an eye on the little chap and finally turned him over to CoL Special to The Times-Democrat.

This is a fine con of Yirginia, the well-known neirro, who is a contestant for a seat in Congress and who sidering that the farmers weru buay uaiuat oi some local legislation, nun said the trouble was due to Patterson's holding on to these bills, the insinuation being tnat the gentle Patterson's grip had been tighter than the necessity required.

Patterson responds in a Macon newspaper and calls iiuff a Jiar. That ended the newspaper war. Both gentlemen came to Atlanta and here they called in their seconds. Mr. Hull called for Waiter Khett, a young man who has figured in the same capacity in several affairs of this kind, while Mr.

Patterson called on Tom Cobb Jackson, the hero of a bloodless duel anh Morris Brandon last November, and son of Capt Harrv Jackson, who seconded Pat. Calhoun when he met John Williamson on the Attila Kill to. A demand was made for retraction and this was refused. That is the status of affairs so far as is known, but developments are anxiously awaited. A dozen reporters have their grips packed, ready and anxious to go to the scene upon the slightest indication of warfare.

Illinois Central train from Minter City, where they had been with the other companies, under orders of the Governor, to quell a threatened riot Col. George S. Green, commanding the battalion, and Adjutant General Henry also returned. CoL Green and Adjutant General Henry state that the troops reached Minter City at 8 o'clock yesterday morning and reported to the sheriff, who at once placed them on duty. During the day they arrested some forty negroes.

The Sim's Birmingham (Ala.) special says: Trouble is expected in Bibb county, about thirty miles south of this city, between the two races, and unless the sheriff or military interfere the results may be very serious. Last week the negroes received forty Winchester rifles from Memphis. On Saturday last party of white men from Bibb county came to this city and bought sixteen Winchesters, and to-day 100 Winchesters were shipped from Nashville consigned to white men in Bibb county. The trouble seems to have originated as long ago as last November, when a pitched battle occurred between a constable's posse and a crowd of negroes they tried to arrext without warrants.
