16 PALM BEACH POST SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2001 Job would concentrate on alleviating needs SENIORS From 1B age and Loxahatchee as well, but would use facilities in Wellington and Royal Palm Beach, Masilotti said. While both villages provide recreational and cultural programs for seniors, he said the senior services coordinator would focus on health, transportation and support needs. That could include finding the senior citizens who may be overlooked on Wheels or visiting nurse, programs, and making those who need it have access to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease support groups, he said. "The goal here is to combine the resources of (the western communities) and reach out to our seniors," he said. "You can have a store full of food, and if nobody knows it's there, that food isn't going to do any good." Steve Petrone, the senior activity coordinator for Royal Palm Beach, believes the need exists.

He said his office often takes calls from those seeking such services. "We don't address some of those issues, and we need all the help we can get," Petrone said. "It sounds great." Teen agrees to deal in Boca dragging case By John Pacenti Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Prosecutors had no confession and a juvenile delinquent as a star witness. But the defense knew jurors would want someone to pay dearly for an 84-year-old dragged to her death underneath a stolen car especially after they saw the crime scene photos. On Friday, four days until trial, the two sides folded their hands as the last of the three Riviera Beach teens implicated in the purse snatching-turnedmurder agreed to a plea deal.

Jimmie Lee Williams, who turns 16 Sunday, will be sentenced to no more than 20 years in prison for second-degree murder. and robbery with a deadly weapon, and may even get less if a pre-sentence report recommends a more lenient sentence to the judge at a hearing on March 2. If he had gone to trial and been found guilty of first-degree murder, a judge would have had no option but to sentence him to life in prison. Williams mother, Linda, stood by her son in court but had no comment. "Given the notoriety of this case I think it would have been very hard to find a fair jury in South Florida," said Williams' defense attorney, Michelle Suskauer.

"Of course, he's remorseful. But he knows in his heart this was something that was never intended. It was completely unexpected and there was nothing he could do to stop it," Suskauer said. Williams snagged Mirel's purse outside of Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House in May 1999 as she walked to her car after breakfast with her husband. As Mirel pounded on the hood for her purse to be returned and another bystander started nudging the Dodge with his own car, Griffin floored the gas pedal. The car dragged Mirel 2,000 feet, leaving her body in pieces down Glades Road. The three teens eventually ditched the car in a canal and were arrested shortly afterward.

Griffin pleaded guilty to firstdegree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Futch, 16, pleaded guilty to being an accessory-after-the-fact for helping dispose of the Dodge. He was sentenced as a juvenile, but quickly violated his probation and is now in detention. He was supposed to be on house arrest at the time of Mirel's death. He became the state's top witness in August when Circuit Judge Hubert Lindsey ruled statements Williams made to police were inadmissable because he had asked for an attorney.

Futch, though, was far from cooperative, refusing to answer questions until Wednesday, when Lindsey threatened to lock him up indefinitely. "The confession was suppressed and no one at the scene could identify Jimmie Williams, so I was relying on Mr. Futch and any other friends of the defendant who would be able to say he made any admissions. And there weren't a lot," said Assistant State Attorney Aleathea McRoberts. McRoberts said the Mirel family supported the plea deal.
