4 Anthony R. Magana, son of Mrs. Amelia R. Whitlock of Clear lake Oaks, recently participated in "Steel Scorpion," a joint Army and Air Force training exercise at Fort Irwin, Calif. During the exercise, more than 3,000 soldiers from Fort Polk, are getting their first taste of desert warfare training.

The dry land at Fort Irwin has little foliage, making it ideal for armor and mechanized operations. a missile repairman with the 705th Maintenance Battalion at Fort Polk, entered the Army in February 1977. The specialist is a 1976 graduate of Clearlake High School in Lakeport. AIRMAN NORMAN DEAN SAN ANTONIO, Tex. Airman Norman A.

Dean son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman A Dean Sr. of Lower Lake, has been selected for technical training at Sheppard AFB, in the Air Force civil engineering field. The airman recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, and studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special Instruction in human relations.

Completion of this training earned the individual credits towards an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Airman Dean is a 1976 graduate of Lower Lake High School. AIRMAN JOHNNY SVENDSEN INDIAN SPRINGS, Nev. Johnny L. Svendsen; son of Mr.

and Mrs. John Svendsen of Ukiah, has received his first promotion in the U.S. Air Force. Svendsen, promoted to airman, recently completed at Chanute AFB, 111., and is now assigned at Indian Springs Air Force Auxllary Field, Nev. He serves as a fire protection specialist with a unit of the Tactical Air Command.

Airman Svendsen is a 1977 graduate of Ukiah High School.
