4B THE PALM BEACH POST THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1998 Day-care worker hit Lawyer: Police 'brainwashed' murder suspect kids, co-workers say Seymour said. Seymour said Slocum told the police that a possible scenario in which he became enraged at the toddler's crying "is a very, very, very high probability." "He says, 'Shut up, shut up, shut and starts kicking the car seat," Seymour said of Slocum. Then, he starts threatening the child, saying, Tou want to go in the water? "For 22 hours they play with his mind, telling him, You had something to do with Yacucci said. They convince him to start talking about scenarios that have no basis in fact" But prosecutor Richard Seymour described the different scenarios that Slocum and police bandied about as Slocum's idea. Philip Yacucci's preemptive strike came during opening statements in the death penalty case of Brian Slocum, 19. He is accused in the October 1997 killing of 2-year-old Brittany Vinson of Port St.

Lucie in a backyard pool. Port St. Lucie police officers testified Wednesday that when they arrived at the Northwest Kilpatrick Avenue home, they found Brittany, unconscious and without a pulse, on a couch inside the house. Efforts to revive the child failed. Slocum first told police he asked another toddler in the house where Brittany was, and the child said, "Brittany pool." After finding Brittany floating face-down, Slocum told police, he pulled her out and called 911.

Slocum was voluntarily interviewed six times by police in the days after Brittany's death before he was arrested. During those interviews, transcripts By Lilian Weis Palm Beach Post Staff Writer ROYAL PALM BEACH A 29-year-old day-care center worker was arrested Tuesday after co-workers told police he hit, shook and threatened children in his care. Kevin Lee Harris was taken to the Palm Beach County jail on charges of aggravated child abuse, aggravated and simple battery, and perjury. He was released on $5,000 bond Wednesday. Harris, of 347 Folsom Road, Loxahatchee, was fired from the Royal Palm Beach day-care center in June after detectives started an investigation.

Harris, who had worked at Aaristo-Care Inc. since 1994, was charged in 1996 with violating probation from a 1992 conviction for exposing his sexual organs. Two employees told police they saw Harris hit, threaten and shake at least four children on several occasions between June id July 10, a police report said. Born December 15, 1905 in West Branch, Iowa, he started working for E. W. LaPlante in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1923. At that time, Mr. LaPlante was moving a town called Osbom, Ohio, out of a potential flood zone due to a new dam, over next to a town called Fairfield.

This was a big job with about two hundred houses to be moved. With a jump start like that, Ken never looked back. Five years later he was made a partner in the firm. While on his way, Ken attended one year of night courses at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and two years of engineering at night at the University of Minnesota. Ken's boss, partner and by then his father-in-law, was not a person to stay in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and look for jobs there.

Mr. LaPlante was also involved in another business venture, thus Ken Adair was the traveling partner that made the trips and operated from the projects. The building moving business was in a phase at this time that involved street widening projects. Site clearance was required for the first phase of street widening, moving multi-storied masonry buildings back to create room for wider streets. Ken took his wife, the former Zola Jeannette LaPlante, and lived in the current project city.

The jobs took months and travel was too slow to do otherwise. The basic method of creating a force to move buildings at that time was either a man making a quarter turn on a series of screw Jacks, or a horse pulling a sweep on a capstan. Both methods were used and the large buildings, sometimes whole city blocks were moved back while keeping the tenant happy by allowing customers in and out of the building during the move. In the mid-thirties, Ken became Vice-President and General Manager when they decided to open a branch office in Indianapolis, Indiana. He became President in 1945, at the death of E.

W. LaPlante. In 1954 the name of the company was changed to LaPlant-Adair Co. In 1959, Ken extended the business to Florida and finally ended up in Boynton Beach, where his son, Michael L. and grandsons, Mark and Michael, are third and fourth generation structural movers.

Ken died November 13, 1998. He was predeceased by his wife, Zola LaPlante Adair, who died January 1992; his daughter, Nancy Adair Peschau Marvel, born November 1928, died October 1979. He is survived by his son, Michael L. Adair; grandsons, Michael Jr. and Mark L.
