2L THE PALM BEACH POST SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1992 With videos and cable channel, Disney's animated films prosper KRAVIS Excitin9 Events CENTER atthe FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Kravis Center! 1 fv v. The idea that an ink-and-color Toon universe could co-exist with the flesh-and-blood world of humankind is a tempting one. Ralph Bakshi, who has striven through the years, with some success, to cast himself as the adult Disney, came up with his own version of Roger Rabbit this summer. But his Cool World, which featured a real Kim Basinger and an even cuter Toon one, sank quickly. Its cartoonist's nightmare had moments of feverish imagination, but Bakshi's cartoons went crazily overboard.

Nothing was ever the same after the death of Walt Disney in 1966, and even during his lifetime, nothing quite lived up to his first magnificent adventure into feature-length animation, the immortal (and still moneymaking) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Both the comeback hits, The Little Mermaid in 1989 and Beauty and the Beast in 1991 recognize the eternal wonder of Snow White. Whether the Magic Kingdom gang can keep the white castle shining diamond bright on animation's highest peak is anybody's guess. Future projects include Fantasia Continued, a revision of the "greatest classical hits," old and new, as well as King of the Jungle, Tiny the Alligator, Humphrey and the Whale and Swan Lake. ANIMATIONfrom 1L Nemo: Adventures in Slumber-land, based on McCay's groundbreaking newspaper comic that bowed in 1905, disappeared from screens quickly this fall perhaps because of poor promotion.

Even Disney has had its disappointments: the relative failure of the re-releases of Pinocchio and The Great Mouse Detective, and less than overwhelming responses to The Rescuers Down Under and Ducktales: The Movie Treasure of the Lost Lamp. Yet these titles, especially because of the Disney imprimatur, good packaging and expert merchandising, will enjoy a long afterlife on tape and on the Disney Channel. Although most of the features in the new era of animation are pitched at children, this has never been the key to the biggest Disney successes. Certainly, both Snow White and Beauty and the Beast can be enjoyed by grownups and Beauty and the Beast, with its offbeat romanticism and its signature song, even grabbed a bit piece of the lucrative teen-dating audience. One way of luring audiences into cartoon worlds calls for mixing live action and animation.
