TWO SECTIONS FOUR CENTS Carpenter Jury To Get Case Soon ATLANTA, Sept Atlanta "ludge, defendant in a trial on charges of attempted murder, may see a jury march out today to deliberate his fate. Robert Carpenter, handsome, 44- year-old Pulton County Civil Court judge, is charged with attempting to murder a friend and Philadelphia lawyer, John Lockwood. As the trial entered its fifth day after a weekend recess, both the accused and the accuser had told their versions of the pre-dawn shooting and the sensational events which preceded it Lockwood testified that the Judge chased him four blocks the night of July 27, shot at him four 'times and wounded him In the face. The -Judge doesn't admit shooting the shooting at he maintains he-was justified.

In an unsworn statement, permitted under Georgia law, the judge painted himself as the innocent victim of a conspiracy by Lockwood to Steal his wife, his money and his good name. West Germany Decides On Mark FRANFURT, Germany, Sept 20 Central Banking Council of the West German Republic convened in a special session here today to decide on a possible lower rate for the West mark, still officially worth 30 cents.

The Bank Deutscher Laender, which acts as the Republic's central bank, ordered all state banks to suspend the buying and selling of foreign currency until further notice. It was officially announced that U. S. High Commissioner John McCloy would issue a statement later today on the question of mark devaluation. Allied officials indicated that the West mark's dollar rate would be trimmed to correspond with the 30.5 per cent cut in the English pound last night.

They said they could not imagine German currencey maintaining its present exchange level in view the British action. Under occupation procedure, recommending a change in the mark rate is a German responsibility, but the Allies have the final right of approval. Tnrtc Swim Channel In Single Day DOVER, England, Sept. Egyptians and a Greek made swim- mining history Saturday, conquering English Channel within the same 24 hours. The feat never had been accomplished twice In a day before.

He crossed from France to England last year. Ziganos stumbled ashore at Fan Bay, just outside Dover breakwater, after being in the water five minutes less than 19 hours. Rehim swam from Dover to Cap Gris Net in 15 hours and 50 minutes.

Hamad took 15 hours and 22 minutes to make the crossing from France to England. The trio defied unfavorable weath er forecasts to make their bids and their luck held. There was a calm sea most of the time and only slight breeze rippled the waters that have been known to batter swimmers into semi-consciousness Ziganos arrived in England nak ed. Canada Ads On Pound Rate OTTAWA, Sept 20 Finance Minister Douglas Abbott will go before the House of Commons tonight with a statement of 'Canada's policy svith regard to the devaluation of sterling currencies. Dealings In foreign exchange are suspended by government order until the opening of business tomorrow, when the foreign exchange control board will tell agents and- dealers what the new rates of exchange will be. There was speculation whether the Canadian Government intends to lower the external value of the Canadian dollar, now fixed at par, with the United States dollar. On the open market in New York, the Canadian dollar fluctuates at a discount of between six and ten cents. Financial and economic officials deserved comment.

A cabinet meeting is expected as a prelude to the House of Commons session tonight. The Bank ot Canada has announced cancellation of its board of directors' regular meeting, in view of the urgency of the financial situation. Maxey Gets Sentence COLUMBIA, S. Sept. 20 Russell B.

Maxey may be sentenced for pistol-whipping the nurse le says he regarded as his common law wife. Judge T. B. Greneker has indicated he will pass sentence this week on the small, wiry former university of South Carolina engineering professor this week. The 45-year-old Maxey could be sent to prison for as little as five years or as long as life.

A general sesson (criminal) court jury convicted Maxey Saturday night of burglarly with intent to murder. It recommended mercy. Brunette divorcee Ann B. Pierce, 35, was the victim of the August 3 beating. Doctors took more than 100 stitches in her face and scalp after the struggle in her suburban bungalow.

Miss Pierce admitted sharing: hotel rooms with Maxey, letting him photograph her in the nude and "admiring him very much." But, she insisted, she never loved him and had ordered him off her property weeks before Aug. 3. Maxey described himself as a "doubletimed" lover who had thought "everything was as rosy as could be." He left his wife of little more than a year, filed a divorce petition, and proposed marriage to Miss Pierce, he testified. The Maxeys since have become reconciled and Mrs. Maxey sat with her husband during the trial.

STEWART CO "THE BIG WAREHOUSE" State Holds Liquor Price Up On Scotch HARRlSBURfi, Srpt. 20 State Liquor Control Board said today it has no plans to reduce prices on its slocks of Scotch Whiskey and other imported liquors and wines due to devaluation of the British pound. The board has about 39,000 cases of Scotch on hand. The present prices range from $5 to $7 a fifth of gallon with most popular brands under $7- One 25-year-old Scotch sells for $13.81 a fifth.

Frank Rutler, acting director of the Bureau of State Stores for the State Monopoly, said even on future purchases little reduction in price can be expected since "in many instances the quotations are now on a dollar basis." "The only reduction we look for is on brands where they might sales," he (old a reporter. Rutler added that on popular brands the supply is still not equal to the demand- In any event. Scotch Whiski'y represents a very small fraction of the State Monopoly's annual sales. There were 87,000 cases of Scotch sold last year against 5,000,000 cases of all products handled in State stores. Reviewing the results of the Washington dollar talks, the Chancellor of the Exchequer told a news conference: "We agreed to create appropriate incentives to export to the dollar areas and make a vigorous attack on production. Well, we have createc the incentive, all right." The pound is now officially worth only $2-80, compared with the previous $4.03. The British hope tnis will stimulate exports by lowering the selling price of British goods.

Seventeen truck drivers were fined $25 to $50 today for piloting overloaded trucks on Pennsylvania's Highways- Over the weekend a total of 60 drivers were arrested by State Police manning weighing stations near Erie on routes five and 20.

It was a pick up in business for the troopers. Last Friday they found only two overloaded trucks on an eight-hour weighing detail. It was the lowest score since first 24 hours of the renewed drive against overloading which began Wednesday night. More than ISO truckers were fined during the period. Troopers could give no reason for the sudden increase.

"Maybe the truckers thought we'd be more lenient or that we'd even stopped weighing," decided State Police Lieut- James Maroney. He said weighing details would stay on the job indefinitely. Most of the trucks coming through the northeast corner of Pennsylvania are traveling the Buffalo- Cleveland route.
