IOC THE PALM BEACH POST MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2001 ft Technology will keep track of runners Farmer pitches UM pastFSU Running Boston Marathon When: Noon today Where: The 26.2-mile course stretches from Hopkington, to Copley Square in Boston. TV: ESPN2 Field: About 15,000 runners. Web site: www.baa.org ning, we now have the technology to accommodate everyone," marathon spokesman Jack Fleming said.

"And this is just the beginning." Indeed, the Boston Marathon has been experimenting with tracking technology since 1996. Since then, the marathon has worked with computer companies to offer more user-friendly ways to track runners. This year, they are placing a device that contains a computer chip on the sneakers of runners and running electronic strips across the course at 11 checkpoints. Each time a runner crosses the strip, their time is collected and made available on the Boston Athletic Association's Web site (www.baa.org). Competitors and fans can keep track of Boston runners by togging onto the Web.

i The Hartford Courant BOSTON Amid more than 15,000 runners and nearly 500,000 spectators, the sea of bodies is overwhelming. And when dazed runners finish the 26 miles of the Boston Marathon, they are surrounded by chaos. For the elite runners who are among the first to cross the finish line today, the bedlam is on the periphery as they are ushered through the crowd and into the arms of friends and family. For The BAA expects to have 1 million visits to its Web site today. On its heaviest days during the year usually the days leading up to the marathon the site will get about 12,000 hits.

Runners also have the option of providing two e-mail addresses and their progress will be sent to those addresses four times throughout the race. The status also can be sent to Internet-enabled cellular phones. Fleming said Boston is the first marathon to provide realtime updates. For hard-core fans, this is a way to monitor the leaders no matter the location. "Whether they are interested in the elite runners or just a friend, they can get updates," he said.

"That's really a breakthrough for the running world." til fa! Ik' Fappies Notebook takes Seminole Handicap 00. J. 1 ft The Florida-bred colt captures his first race as a 4-year-old. But Palmer has heard a wide range of predictions as to where he will be taken, from the third round to the seventh. He has worked out for 10 teams so far. Palmer has gotten his fill of the psychological tests teams administer potential draftees.

"One question asked which would I rather be, a cat or a dog?" Palmer said. "I said dog because I figured a dog was more aggressive. There's really no good reason why I picked it. I guess if (teams are) spending all this money on a player, they want to get into his head. Some of the questions are pretty funny." Possibly one of the most interesting players in the draft is former Florida receiver James Capel, who left the school last year to run in the Sydney Olympics, where he was a 200-meter finalist.

Instead of returning to school, Capel decided to turn pro in football and ran a 4.3 in the 40. "Whatever team drafts me, (when) I get into camp, then they 11 get a chance to see me move on a couple of people and get into my routes," Capel said. "Then they'll know that I can play ball besides being able to run." The 25-year-old brother of Michael Schumacher drove his Williams-BMW car to an almost unchallenged triumph, earning the British team its first GP win since September 1997 and ending a 22-race winning streak by either Ferrari or McLaren drivers. It also was the first time that two brothers have won the same Fl Grand Prix race Michael is the reigning champion. Schumacher clinched the prestigious win on his 70th GP start leading every lap of the 62-lap race.

He beat David Coulthard by 4.3 seconds and third-place Rubens Barrichello by 34.7 seconds in the fourth Championship race at the Ferrari home circuit in Imola. Schumacher, starting from the second row behind the all-McLaren Mercedes front row of Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen, was off to a fast start, almost going into the grass with the left wheels of his car to pass Coulthard. He led the pole sitter by one second after the first lap and steadily stretched his advantage, holding first place after two pit stops. Ralf smiled broadly as someone suggested that he had learned a lot from watching Michael put together 46 GP wins and three world titles in 148 GP races. "I had a great start, I pushed hard throughout the initial laps. Then it was a pretty long race.

It was a lucky day. We had some bad luck in the previous races," Schumacher said. "Michael came up after the race to say I did a good job. I think we will have a big party tonight." Sunday's runner-up finish lifted Coulthard, winner of the previous race in Brazil, into a first-place tie with Michael Schumacher for championship points, at 26.
