"I've asked young people what they like about that type of music and they always tell me the same thing: 'Because it feels That's all they will say," he said. Boykin, who hopes to expand the crusade to other churches, said, "During the days ahead, we Americans need to be listening "to more patriotic music." TALLAHASSEE (AP) The Lakewood Baptist Church had a big burn-in this week. Some $2,200 worth of rock music records went up in smoke after church officials, labeling the music immoral, began a campaign to get rid of it.

"It appeals to the flesh," Charlie Boykin, associate pastor and the church's youth director, said yesterday in explaining why he was against the music of Elton John, the Rolling Stones and other rock groups. Boykin said he had seen statistics which showed "of 1,000 girls who became pregnant out of wedlock, 984 committed fornication while rock music was being played." He said the main thing wrong with the music is the sensual beat. "There's a rhythm to our bodies and when we hear music with a similar rhythm we respond to that beat. Too much of" this can affect you in the wrong way," he said. Boykin said that even some gospel music has the wrong kind of beat.

"There's bad music all around us. It's not only rock music. Even gospel rock has that beat," he said. At the Wednesday night bonfire, conducted after prayer services, teenage members of the church were asked to bring Top 40 records which they felt unleashed unrestrained carnal appetites. "Teenagers in the church felt they couldn't give the records away," Boykin said.

The students learn the moves he calls "release" and how to stand in a defense position appropriate for kicking. "These can be practiced at home with a pillow, a rolled-up mattress or with another person," he said.

Davis said a recent incident involving a 105-pound girl chased and threatened by two boys and a larger girl illustrates the value of self-defense in school. "Using her defense education, she first slammed her books into the neck of one boy, then kicked the other boy in the groin," Davis said. "After that, her attackers ran away and she was not bothered again." Kitchens said the course so far has not been mandated but 'is "strongly recommended" by the school administration, he expressed the hope that male instructors as well as female will cooperate in teaching it to students. A bill pending in the state legislature would require every school district in the state to offer self-defense to males and females beginning with the 1977-78 school term, Kitchens said. 1, 2. 3, 1975 JACKSONVILLE A self-defense course especially designed for girls and small boys that combines "common sense and dirty fighting" will be taught at Duval County high schools to help reduce school crime. "The crime rate indicated that we need to offer this kind of program," said Jim Kitchens, Duval supervisor of physical education. "We consider it a worthwhile offering because of an identified need." Within the past two weeks a girl was attacked by three other girls at a local high school and cut badly with a box-opener and another girl was raped inside a junior high by a boy who was assisted in the crime by another girl. Benny Davis, a second degree black belt judo instructor, said the two-week course he designed combines "common sense and dirty fighting." Comparing it with a course in water life-saving, Davis said physical tactics are considered a "last resort" if common sense preventive measures fail.

On the other hand, girls are taught the most vulnerable portions of the male body and how to defend themselves with elbows, thumbs, fingers and feet, Davis said, adding that a girl's fist is not much good as protection against a boy. Davis, who already teaches the course at Ribault Junior High School, said although the techniques he teaches are especially vital to girls they also can be helpful to small boys bullied by larger boys. "You hear it so often, some kid comes up and says, Give me a he said He said in most school situations the aggressor is unarmed and can be frightened away by a girl or boy-skilled in defense, but he strongly advises against doing anything foolish. "Even a professional martial arts expert can get cut trying to defend himself against a person with a knife, so we do not advise anyone to protect himself against a knife except in a life-and-death situation. "We say, 'If someone is trying to take your purse, watch or ring' give it to In the case of a lady's virtue, that's up to the lady.

But if the lady knows the man is going to kill her two children in the back seat of the car, she should use her self-defense."
