"Most of the rest of the time, I spend cutting, tumbling and polishing stones." There is a strong Oriental influence in the shop and Miss Rodack emphasizes everything "except what I make myself" is imported "direct." She says, "Chinese things come from Taiwan, Japanese things come from Japan, and Hong Kong things come from Hong Kong. That's the way I do business." Although Miss Rodack was in business for several years in the old Bazaar International in Riviera Beach, she has been in the Palm Coast Plaza only since May. "Oh, I'd love to have that" as Miss Rodack lets the browsers browse. It is a small shop, but Betty Rodack has something for almost everyone.

There is a lot of jewelry and a wild assortment uncut and cut-and-polished, semi-precious and not-so-precious stones. And handmade jewelry. "Nobody can compete with me, pricewise, because I cut the stones myself," Miss Rodack says. "Look at this ring, I did the fine gold wrapping myself, cut and polished the stone isn't it a beauty?" It was. "I never make the same of anything," she says as she picks out another sample from the display case.

The stone is different and the setting is different, but it too is a beauty. Near the door to her shop, Miss Rodack has one of her prize possessions: The 1970 blue ribbon for first award by the Gem Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches. The ribbon adorns a glass case of the showpiece, which features a cut dendritic agate with the perfect outline of a cocker spaniel. "I was cutting that agate about two months after my own cocker died," she explains, "and made the rest of the display to go with it." Although she has been cutting stones for only four years, Miss Rodack schedules her shop hours around stones and gems. "I'm open 10 a.m.

There is a medium-strong scent of incense in Imports Unlimited, Miss Ro-dack's Palm Coast Plaza shop just south of Woolco in West Palm Beach. Racks of imported dresses, happy coats and wraparound wearing apparel compete with a staggering array of almost everything. "There sure is a lot to see in here," says a browsing male.

Part of Clifford's anticipation is built around convention business. The Breakers earnestly is trying to build it something unheard of in past years. "Convention business accounted for 19,000 room nights during the off-season' this year," Clifford says proudly, "but we already have 30,000 room nights booked for the coming year." How those figures compare with the in-season guest traffic is pointed out by Clifford, who refers to a complete statistical report. "We had 10,000 room nights of social guests for 17,000 guest nights," he says, ex plaining multiple occupancy accounts for more guest nights than room nights. "So, you can see the convention business is important to us." Interestingly, Clifford's report reveals that three rooms in the hotel where taken last season for four months or more.

Twenty-four rooms were taken for more than three months, 74 for more than two months, 239 for three weeks but less than four, 448 rooms were taken by guests for two weeks but less than three, 944 rooms were taken for one week but less than two, and 936 rooms were taken for three days but less than a week. "That rather blows the common conception that we cater only to people who come to spend the entire season with us," Clifford says. With a massive investment in perking up the 45-year-old grand dame on the beach, Clifford sizes up the future: "I want to see last year's business doubled in five years. I say don't think occupancy, but vacancy and work on it."
