Friday, March si, 2000 Early cani Centegra Health System reminds readers the argument for cancer screening is simple: anyone can get cancer, but those who detect the cancer early have the best chance of getting successful treatment. For women with localized breast cancer, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent. But only 20 percent of those whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body can expect to live that long. For colorectal cancer, only seven percent of patients with advanced disease survive five years or longer compared to 91 percent of those who get early detection. If all Americans used tests now available, the American Cancer Society estimates the relative survival rates for these cancers would increase to more than 95 percent.

To help educate the public on the can NEIGHBOR Section 3 importance of getting regularly screened for cancer, Centegra Health System is sponsoring two cancer screenings: colorectal screenings and mammograms, which screen for breast cancer in women. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of death of men and women in the United States with an estimated 129,400 new cases diagnosed in 1999. The signs and symptoms of this type of cancer include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool or a change in bowel habits. These symptoms may not always appear or you may have a family history of the disease which is a risk factor, therefore the American Cancer Society recommends a fecal occult blood test annually after age 50. The test can identify if there is blood in the stool.

Centegra Health System will offer this screening free of charge during April 10-14 at both Memorial Medical Center on Doty Road in Woodstock and Northern Illinois Medical Center, on Route 31 in McHenry. A limited number of kits are available and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Kits can be picked in the lab from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at either hospital Mammography can detect tumors so small even a doctor cannot feel them during physical examination.

Mammograms take x-ray films of breast tissue so it can be screened for cancer. Studies have shown early detection increases survival and treatment options. The large declines in breast cancer mortality have been attributed in part to the use of regular mammography screening. The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older have an annual mammogram, an annual clinical breast examination by a health care professional and perform monthly breast self-examinations. During April, Centegra Health System will offer reduced-fee mammograms at $70 including the radiologist fees.

Mammogram appointments can be made by calling the following facilities: Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock, (815) 334-3116; Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry (815) 759-4301; or the Centegra Medical Office building, Crystal Lake, (815) 477-3400.
