A giant television tower taller than the Kmpire State Building or the Eiffel Tower was trembling and buckling, snapping its three-inch guy wires like mere ropes.

Hobby and two other riggers were 40 feet above the ground where they were installing a coaxial cable on the 1.484-toot spire. Only Hobby survived when the tower fell "like a telescope folding up" noon Friday. rom his bed at Florida Hospital, Eugene (Jairelt Hobby, a 21-year-old graduate of keon High School in Tallahassee, tried to re-Jhember how he escaped being crushed to fleath. "You just spring away." Mark Saunders of Tallahassee was on the ground supervising his tower maintenance irew. He watched as his brother, Tomrnie. J9, was crushed to death under tons of steel.

Also killed in the fall was W. Dennis Miller. 34. of Tallahassee. "I watched it come down, and I knew which way it would fall, so I stayed where I was." Saunders said.

Near Saunders on the ground was another workman. Mike Diamond of Tallahassee, who bolted and ran through a field of tall grass and leaped a barbed wire fence to get out of the way. T. Sherman Penny, an engineer for WDBO-TV, was slightly injured when part of the tower crashed atop the station's transmitter building. Inside another small building at the base of the tower was Randv Scott, a disc jockey for radio station WDIZ.

"It was like being inside a earthquake," said Scott, who was not hurt. The cause of the collapse of the $500,000 tower, which was shared by several TV and radio stations, remained a mystery yesterday. Saunders, who owns Tower Maintenance Company of Florida, a contract firm based in Miccosukee. speculated it possibly was "under heavy stress" and overloaded with too many antennas. The three-sided structure, 10 feet wide, was built to withstand 150-m h.

"But this was something I sure wasn't expecting to happen." Hobby said Saunders told him.
