Conservator to discuss work on Geneva creche Conservator Eves will present a free slide lecture at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Geneva Historical Museum in Wheeler Park off Route 31.

Eves will describe the restoration process of the 19th-century Italian figures from the Geneva Christmas creche collection, originally displayed during the Christmas season at The Little Traveler shop for 40 years. The presentation will also include an overview of art conservation challenges and processes. Eves holds a master's degree in art conservation from Buffalo State College. She has worked at museums across the country, including the Art Institute and the Field Museum in Chicago. The conservation projects she has worked on range from ancient artifacts to classical art to outdoor sculpture.

Recently she opened a private conservation studio. The entire Christmas creche collection, consisting of 44 19th entury figures, a miniature grotto and the 18th century French bed used as a display case, will be on display for the holiday season beginning Saturday. Eighteen figures, including four restored by Eves this year, and the wall bed have been restored. Museum hours are from i to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday through Dec.

These adult volunteers, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, help give children, living in a single- parent home, the additional attention and support they need The demand for volunteers is great. To help recruit adult volunteers, the Daily Herald is part-, nering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fox Valley's "All I want for is a friend" campaign.

One volunteer opportunity is highlighted each week to give readers an impression of the ways they could get involved in a mentoring relationship with a child. The campaign hopes to recruit adults who are willing to see a child on a consistent basis for one year. Big Brother volunteer Want to make a big impact? By becoming a Big Brother to a child who needs a friend you can help them answer the question: "What did I learn today?" Big Brother volunteers are screened and matched with boys who share similar interests with them. Big Brother Volunteers promise to spend time with their "Little Brother" two to three times a month for a year. Big Brother Matches enjoy one on one together doing everyday activities such as talking, playing orwatching sports, work- Big Brother Brian often helps with his Little Brother's Scouting projects.

Orientations are held monthly at 158 E. Chicago Elgin. FROM THE ARMED FORCES Airman Brian T. Stokes has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Stokes is the son of Stephine Werner of Cahokia. and Charles Stokes of Geneva. He is a 1999 graduate of Cahokia Senior High School. Navy Lt.

Cmdr. David A. Paulk, a 1977 graduate of Geneva High School, recently reported for duty with the aircraft carrier Pre- commissioning Unit Harry S. Truman, based at Newport News, Va. Paulk joined the Navy in December 1984 and is a 1981 graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

He also holds an MS degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterev. Calif. Navy Midshipman Hope Kelly, daughter of Michael and Martha Kelly of Geneva, recently completed the six week U.S. Naval Academy indoctrination in Annapolis, Md.

The demand, fast-paced orientation begins four years of preparation for commissioning as naval or Marine Corps officers. During Plebe Summer, Kelly learned the basic skills in seamanship, navigation, infantry drill, sailing and marksmanship. Kelly also learned the Brigade of midshipmen's Honor Concept. She is a 1999 graduate of Glen- bard West High School in Glen Ellyn. Comic program to delve into serious subject Comedienne Wendi Fox will present the program "Alcohol Insanity Tour" at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elgin Community College's Student Resource Center Lounge. Fox, who is from California, draws from her personal experiences of being reared in an alcoholic environment to demonstrate the dangers of alcohol abuse. As a stand-up comic, she identifies the problems, offers thoughts and ideas on how to correct them so the abuse can stop, and shares her thoughts, experiences and opinions on how alcohol abuse has become a national catastrophe.

Fox has spent the last eight years traveling across the country visit- ELGIN COMMUNITY ing colleges and clubs, giving newspaper interviews, and making radio and IV appearances. Her presentations validate the feelings and thoughts of those in similar situations, and cultivate an awareness between low self-esteem and alcohol abuse. Her presentations publicly identify the problems in which she offers thoughts and ideas on how to correct them and stop the legacy from continuing into the next generation.
