Already moving to check this trend, the Senate Public Works Committee yesterday approved un animously its so-called "anti-depression" bill authorizing the government to advance $100,000,000 to fates and communities for planning a public works program. The Senate Labor Committee approved, also uanlmously, a year's extension, with some modifications, of the "52-20" jobless veterans law which Is due to expire Monday. President who already has launched his own program ol directing government buying and spending in areas hardest hit by unemployment, had urged extension of the law. The so-called "82-20" law author- ices federal pay up to $20 a week for 52 weeks to jobless veterans. The government has spent $3,620,000,000 on this program since Sept.

1944. About 600,000 veterans now are drawing benefits. The Employment Security Agency that total unemployment benefit payments during the first six months of this years were about 1800,000,000. This almost twice the amount paid out during the same period last year. The average weekly number of claimants in June was 1,840,000, compared with 1,716,000 in May.

Initial claims, representing new unemployment, rose from 37,400 to 341,600 during the week ending on July 16, latest on record, the Bu reau said. Continued claims, representing weeks of unemployment among the covered worjters, rose from 1,962, 000 to 2, new weekly high. All but five states r-sported In creases during the July 16 week.
