JOSEPH ERNEST MAROUN Joseph Ernest Maroun, former President of Bristol-Myers Squibb International Group and a Senior Vice President of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, died suddenly of a heart attack on Friday. March 8. at his winter home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. He also maintained a home in Moultonborough. NH.

He was 72 and his international Career at B-M Squibb spanned more than 32 years. Mr. Maroun was born on June 22, 1929 in Johannesburg, South Africa. A graduate in Anthropology of the University of the Witwafersrand In Johannesburg, he joined Bristol- Myers as a market researcher and went on to become General Manager of the Company's South African subsidiary in a very snort period of time. During his long career, which took him to Belgium, England, Italy.

Mexico and the United States, he was a major force behind the growth of the Bristol-Myers International Group, a division that grew from less than $50 million in sales in 1958 to more than $8 billion last year. Bristol-Myers Squibb International Group was responsible tor all of Bristol's worldwide operations and included such well known brands as Clairol. Excednn, the Mead Johnson Infamil brand of baby formula and the pharmaceutical line of antibiotics, cardiovascular and oncology products. Since his retirement Mr Maroun served as a member of the board ot two biopharmaceutical companies-Cell Genysis and Abgenix ot Freemont, California. Abgenix develops anti-body based therapies for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune infectious and cardiovascular diseases He also served as a member of the board of Doubletree Hotels.

He was also past Chairman of the international Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. He was a member of the Old Marsh Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla, and Bald Peak Colony Club, Moultonborough, NH. He is survived by his wife of 46 years. Pasena, and by three sons. John was put on the heart transplant list in 1991 and received his new heart on Oct. 6th 1992. When you think of the word extrovert, think of John.

He danced where there was no music. He char-med small children, the elderly, and everyone in between. John brought an energy and enthusiasm to life that was contagious. Simply put. he loved life and all people.

This unique man will be truly missed but even in his passing the sadness ol losing him is overpowered by his spirit of life. John now entrusts this spirit to his beloved wife of 30 years.
