THE PALM BEACH POST SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2000 MSL Woman inspired hybrids to honor Leeann Connelly's iris hybrids adorn the memorial for fallen deputies at the sheriff's office. Greenhouse owner Leeann "Connelly has developed new irises for fallen By A. Scharnhorst Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Leeann Connelly saw the widow on TV, crying with her children while the judge sentenced her husband's killer to death. Connelly had never known Palm Beach County sheriff's Sgt. James "Rocky" Hunt, but she was struck by an overwhelming desire to help his family.

"It just hit me so hard," the Loxahatchee nursery owner said, remembering the trial from more than four years ago. "Her husband was just ripped out of their lives violently and unexpectedly. I just had to do something to let her and her children know of my empathy." So Connelly, who is known for developing new hybrids of water lilies and other plants at her Tropical Pond Garden, decided to dedicate a series of iris hybrids to Hunt and other officers who have died in the line of duty. The iris Rocky Hunt a blue, purple and pink variety was the first. "Irises are ancient flow- ers, and they've always been associated with royalty and special people in Connelly said.

She approached then-Sheriff Charles McCutcheon once the Rocky Hunt was in bloom, asking his blessing to continue developing the series. She suggested that the irises be planted in a prominent spot at the sheriff's office headquarters, where deputies would see them each day. "Every day it would do two things," she said.

"One, remind them of those who had been killed, thereby reminding them to be safe and careful. Two, it would show them that someone who's not another officer just a citizen of Palm Beach County cares about them." The sheriff's office already had a memorial area for fallen deputies, with a small stone monument and flag. Connelly looked at the Memorial Garden area and was, she said, shocked. "The grass was nothing but weeds, and there was no feeling of importance there and no CATHERINE WARD BENHART 62, of Royal Palm Beach passed away April 28, 2000. Mrs.

That sparked Connelly's to improve the area. After smoothing the way with county officials, securing donations from Home Depot, Donald Trump and others, and donating hours of her own time, Connelly and members of a memorial committee have completed that task. The garden now features a small wroughtiron fence, varieties of white-flowering plants and small ponds planted with the irises that Connelly has developed thus far honoring Hunt and deputies Kevin Mathews, Frank Genovese and Anita Pospisil. "The absence of color in the garden symbolizes the absence of the officers from their families," she said. Connelly does not have nursery stock to sell the hybrids yet, she said, but has a waiting list for those who would like to buy the plants.

She continues development of irises to honor other slain officers. "I had several blooming this year that I was hoping would be good enough for the series, but I turned them down," she said. The sheriff's office has planned a ceremony to honor the officers and dedicate the revamped Memorial Garden. The ceremony, at 10 a.m. Friday, also includes a free barbecue, Connelly said.

Connelly's nursery suffered major damage last fall from wind and flooding in the wake of Hurricane Irene. This project, she said, has helped keep her going. "Times are hard right now," she said. "But this has given me something else to focus on." For information about the iris hybrids, call the nursery at 791-8994. a resident for 20 years, died Friday.
