Ryan Cummings of Streamwood is laid to rest in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in downstate Elwood. The Marine died June 3 outside Fallujahi Iraq. Gone, never forgotten From the playing fields to the pain of Iraq; from business and politics to the arts, we bid farewell in 2006 "I think I'm a perfect coach for this place. My whole life I've been told I was too short, not fast enough, not good enough.

I fit perfectly into living life with a chip on my shoulder." Randy Walker "I wrote about wars and the threat of nuclear bombs and about crooks in government, but invariably a few paragraphs on the best ways to get ketchup out of a narrow-necked bottle generated more response than a column on how the state was losing millions." JackMabley lt like a religion. A lot of our boys were raised up on Notre Dame but not good enough to be recruited by them. You had to beat that team. If you didn't, you were a dog." Ray Meyer, describing die underlying fire surrounding the DePaut Notre Dame rivalry In 2006, we lost one of the most famous coaches in ihe history of collegiate athletics, and another one who died before his time. We lost one of our young men to the battlefields of Iraq.

We said goodbye to one woman who helped push back the veil covering the AIDS crisis and another who fought tirelessly to allow girls the joy of playing competitive sports. A businessman, an adventurer and a 105- year-old man who saw lived much and who poured his heart into his museum. We lost public servants who tried to better their communities and a remarkable artist who saw the world through his opera-performing puppets. We bid a fond farewell to a world-class writer and friend. Here, then, is a final salute to some of the people who contributed to our world, and who passed in 2006.
