Odak, beloved wife of Thomas L. Odak, passed away quietly on January 6, 1999. Born in Newark, New Jersey, daughter of the late Joseph and Bridget Brady, she married Thomas in 1972 and resided in Morristown, NJ until moving to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in 1989. They were members of Essex County Country Club, West Orange, NJ from 1975 to 1989 and members of A National Golf Club since moving to Florida. Mrs.

Odak was a cost analyst for the Foster Wheeler Corporation, Livingston, NJ, prior to her retirement in 1980. She was formerly married to the late Dr. A.R. Oliva. Mrs.

Odak Is survived by: her loving husband of 26 years; two sons: Joseph R. Oliva, of Alexandria, VA and Carroll J. Oliva, of Randolph, NJ; one daughter, Suzanne Flynn, of Cedar Grove, NJ; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; one stepson, Stephen Odak, of Asbury Park, NJ; and one stepdaughter, Karen Nieder, of Milford, PA. Pereira, age 84, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida passed away suddenly on Wednesday evening, January 6, 1999 at his residence. He was born October 29, 1914 in Arcos del Valdvez, Portugal, son of the late Manuel Pereira and Rosa Cerqueira Pereira. He had been a resident of the Palm Beaches since 1972, coming from Manhasset, Long Island, New York. Mr. Pereira owned and operated Pereira Landscaping Company, West Palm Beach until his retirement in 1979.

He was one of the Founding Fathers of the Portuguese American Cultural Society, serving as one of the Directors and was very active in the Society at the time of his death. Mr. Pereira was an active communicant of St. Francis of Assist Catholic Church, Riviera Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria M.

Pereira, who died February 13, 1990, and one grandson, Christopher Simms, who died May 26, 1998. Mr. Pereira leaves to cherish his loving memory: his devoted children, Joaquim M. CHRISTENSEN "CHRIS" Jack Douglas Christensen, known to many as "Chris" died after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 6, 1999. Jack was bom and raised in New York, serving three years In the United Slates Coast Guard stationed in the North Atlantic. He moved to Florida in 1959 with his wife and son. Jack retired as a Sergeant from the West Palm Beach Police Department after more than twenty years of devoted service to the people of this city, as a patrolman, motorcycle officer, accident investigator, jail supervisor, court bailiff, and the first liaison officer between the police department and the circuit court. He thereafter joined the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department as a deputy at the Palm Beach international Airport and an ambassador of good will; with a friendly wave, a smile an a pleasant word to everyone he met. Jack received many commendations from individuals in the community, including Senator Bob Graham and the Swedish Consulate.

He retired in 1993, at the age of sixty-five, after ten years of service. Jack spent many happy days with Ixirraine traveling throughout the United States, playing golf with his three best friends, enjoying football as an avid fan, and socializing on the deck of his Cashiers, North Carolina home during the summer. Iglesias was a Professional Baseball Player in Cuba and in the United States for many years. He was the proprietor of Covington Marine Sales in Covington, GA for many years, retiring in 1993 and was a member of Temple Beth Hallel in Roswell, GA He was a very loving Husband, Father and Grandfather who will be greatly missed by his entire family. Streib came to the Palm Beaches in the early 1970's from CT. He had worked in the Auto Parts sales for various auto dealerships in the area, including Palm Beach Lincoln Mercury. He was a former 3rd generation own-r and operator of Grand Rapids Gravel Company in Grand Rapids, MI, with his brother, Clyde, from 1964 1o 1987. He was a past board member of the National Sand and Gravel Association and the National Ready Mix Association.

Prior to that time he founded and Operated Battle Creek Gravel Company from 1943 to 1954. While in Battle Creek, MI he was an active civic leader as an elected city commissioner, chairman of Various civic organizations, including the March of pimes and Lions Clubs International. He was also a founding member of Trinity Reformed Church in Creek. He was also a past member of La Grave Vlvenue Christian Reformed Church. He was an active member of Cascade Hills Country Club in Grand Jlapids and Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton each, FL.

He attended Grand Rapids Junior College and Hope College in Holland, MI. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maxine Van Zylen Battjes, and their three sons, Donald Jr. of Cos Angeles, Douglas of Grand Rapids, and David and his wife Margaret. He also has two granddaughters, Jacqueline Joy Battles of North Ft. Meyers, FL, and Katherine Allen Battjes of Los Angeles, CA.

In -addition to his brother, Clyde and his wife Dorothy of Saugatuck, MI. Mr. Battjes is survived by his sister, Uoyce Vandenberg and her husband Leonard, of JJiand Rapids. He retired from Asplundh Tree Export as Vice President and General Manager for Eastern and Southern Florida. Formerly, he had been a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was a member of the Tequesta Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Minivan Massey of Tequesta; a daughter, Marsha Massey of Seattle, WA; a son, T. Kevin Massey of Mill Valley, CA; two brothers, John Massey of Coral Gables, FL and Harry Massey of BrooksviUe, FL; and a sister, Rose Lillard of Franklin, NC. He was 67. Born in Soufh Bend, Indiana, Jim was married for 45 years to Margie Baer. After they relocated to Florida in 1976, both became very active in local charities. Jim was Vice President of the Palm Beach County Jewish Federation when his vision lor the Jewish communily in the southern portion of the county led him to form an independent federation to more closely serve the local community.

He was subsequently elected its first piesident and served as its first campaign chairman. The original federalion campus was named in honor of Jim and Margie Baer. Jim was also instrumental in founding the Donna Klein Jewish Academy, the Levis Jewish Community Center, the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service and Camp Ted Weisberg. Until his death, Jim remained an active board member of the Federation. Today the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County has grown into one of the largest federations in the united btates.

Active in national and international charities. Jim served as national chairman for Missions of the United Jewish Appeal, leading numerous missions to Israel. In addition, Jim served on the national governing boards of the Council of Jewish Federations, the Joint Distribution Committee and the United Jewish Appeal. Jim was the first President of the Southeast U.S. chapter of the American Associates of Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, later serving another full term in the same position.

He served on Ben Gurion University's International Board of Governors, Also active throughout Florida, Jim served two terms as president of the Florida Association of Jewish Federations. He was a board member of the Broward and Palm Beach County National Council of Christians and Jews and of the Boca Raton United Way. BAER became active members of Temple Beth El in Boca Raton. Jim served as its president for seven years, leading the congregation through one of ils largest capital expansions and to a position of prominence in the community. He was particularly proud of his role in the growth of the temple's religious education programs for children and adults.1 In 1984 he was an adult Bar Mitzvah at the temple. A resident of South Bend, Indiana before coming to Florida, Jim was active in the operation of Baers Furniture from the time his parents, Melvin and Lucille, founded the business in 1945. He took over operational control in the early sixties and oversaw the expansion in Indiana to four stores and the opening in 1968 of the first Baer's store in Florida.

Under the direction of Jim, Baer's Furniture Showcases have grown to become the largest chain of family-owned and family-operated furniture stores in the country. There are ten stores in south Florida and two more slated to open in 1999. Jim's sons, Richard and Ronald, both followed his footsteps in management of the company.
