It's time to align your planets You know you've heard of it the whole MarsVenus intergalactic-gender-warfare-why-can't-we-all-just-get-along deal. Well, it was created by romance swami John Gray, whose first book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus in 1992 gave rise to five spinoffs (Mars and Venus Starting Over; In Love; Together Forever; On a Date; and In the Bedroom).

Nowadays, he has vid- eos, seminars, CD-ROMs, counseling centers, audio tapes and a steady gig on Oprah. Who'd have guessed this guy is a former Hindu monk who practiced celibacy for nine years? Not to worry. He's been married to his second wife, Bonnie, since 1985. (Three kids.) The bottom line of Gray's philosophy is simple: The sexes are different. Women: If a man needs time alone in his "cave," back off.

Men: If a woman needs you to listen, really listen, then shut up and lend an ear already. While Gray, 46, is beloved by millions, others are less swooned. A Web site tagged "Rebuttal from Uranus" rips his ideas as "sexist, patronizing, male-centered invective which does little more than perpetuate long-held negative gender stereotypes." Perhaps. But his empire continues to grow. Today, in fact, he launches a syndicated column.

"I'm a man on a mission," Gray has said. "I help men and women understand each other." You can't blame a guy for trying.
