8C THE PALM BEACH POST Tl SC 1595 Panthsrs Calendar In the Crease OCT08ERNOVEMSE STRETCHING IT: Tampa Bay opened the Ice Palace with a win over the Rangers. According to center Brian Bradley, the victory meant more than just a couple of points in the standings. "I think we showed everybody what a great building we have," he said. SLEEPWALKING: The Rangers' start has been disappointing, if anything. Some have suggested that nine games in 16 days may have something to do with that.

By BRIAN BIGGANE Pa-m Beach Post Staff Writer PHOENIX While a steaming Florida Panthers General Manager Bryan Murray went off to look for referee Dan Marouelli, coach Doug MacLean needed a few more minutes than usual to cool off before facing the media. That was the scene Sunday night at America West Arena after the Panthers were unable to hold a lead in the final seconds of regulation and were left with a 1-1 tie with the Phoenix Coyotes. Florida (4-0-3) remained the NHL's only unbeaten team.

What upset Murray and Mac-Lean was MarouehTs penalty distribution. Of the 18 penalties he whistled, 13 were on Florida, leaving a power-play discrepancy of 10-2 in favor of trie Coyotes and one of those two Panthers power plays lasted all of four seconds. "We were fighting city hall tonight," goalkeeper John Van-biesbrouck said. "We were forced to kill penalties for a full period," MacLean said. "I thought we outplayed them.

We outshot them the last two periods it was an unbelievable effort." Four of the Panthers' penalties came in overtime, when referees normally hold their whistles. Three came with 21 seconds remaining in response to what the Panthers considered to be a blatant charging penalty by Jeremy Roenick, who left his feet and threw himself at defenseman Gord Murphy behind the Florida net with no penalty being called. "That's how it all started. Let's do your job, Mr. Marouelli. He can't do that" Fitzgerald and Tkachuk got matching penalties; Terry Carkner also was sent off for high-sticking, and the Florida bench also got a minor when a piece of gum was thrown on the ice. Marouelli chose to give the Coyotes a 5-on-3 for the final 21 seconds, but Phoenix was unable to capitalize.

The teams played more than 50 minutes of scoreless, close-checking hockey before Scott Mellanby opened the scoring with 8:55 remaining when he poked a loose puck between the legs of goaitender Nikolai Khabibulin. Just when it started to look like the goal would hold up, Rhett Warrener was sent off for holding with 42 seconds left, and when Phoenix pulled Khabibulin for an extra skater, the Coyotes had a 6-on-4 advantage in skaters. Mike new permanent home for the Lightning in Tampa Bay," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bett-man. "We are thrilled to be able to give the club and the Tampa Bay area a chance to show it off." The Ice Palace has seating capacity of 19,500 for hockey, and features 72 luxury suites and 3,000 club seats. This year's game will be played in San Jose, and next year's will be at Vancouver's GM Place.

"He backhanded it, it hit (Murphy's) shin and my armpit and went in," Vanbiesbrouck said. Gartner and Tkachuk both had great chances to win it in overtime, but Vanbiesbrouck came up with a pair of remarkable saves to maintain the stalemate. Phoenix had two goals disallowed earlier in the game, one because Gartner hit the puck out of the air with a high stick and the second when a replay requested by the Panthers detected forward Jim McKenzie with a skate in the crease. After playing five of their first seven on the road, the Panthers return home for six of their next eight. Of the 1-0-2 trip, Vanbiesbrouck said: "We grinded and played hard, which is what you have to do on the road.

We wound up with a couple ties, but we had the opportunity to win every game. That's all you can ask." Noteworthy: Colorado center Joe Sakic, who had nine points in three games, was named the NHL's Player of the Week. Sakic, a nine-year veteran, currently leads the NHL in scoring with 15 points, including 11 assists. He had a goal and five assists in a 7-2 win over Edmonton last Tuesday and two goals and an assist in a 9-2 victory over Vancouver on Saturday. He was held scoreless Thursday in the Florida Panthers' 2-1 victory in Denver.
