Olive Avenue WPB 561-659-6756 Call for your Free Consultation napped by the Symbionese Liberation Army from the apartment she shared with her fiance, Steven Weed, in Berkeley, she became an actress in earnest. If she didn't pretend to believe in the goals of the paramilitary zealots holding her captive, she has said repeatedly, she would have been killed. Today, she is still a magnet for all kinds of musings for some, a symbol of everything wrong with this country in the 1960s; for others, a symbol of high ideals.

"People who feel guilty for not taking their idealism farther still come up to me and tell me that I was the symbol of what they were supposed to do," she said. But she is well aware that others, who villianize her as a bad girl whose jail sentence was commuted by Jimmy Carter in 1979 because of her family's prominence, think she should remain invisible. "I find it strange for people to think that after being kidnapped I should remain in hiding the rest of my life," she said. constant annoyance. Still, it's hard to resist.

Last year, she played a perky suburban mother on Nickelodeon's sitcom The Adventures of Pete and Pete. By that time, she had spent more than a decade as the famously stay-at-home Connecticut wife of her former bodyguard Bernard Shaw, who is now in charge of security at the Hearst Corp. Going for the theatrical Her childhood home in Hillsborough, was not one in which any theatrical ambitions were encouraged. "Saying that I wanted to be an actress," she said, "would have been like saying I wanted to be a whore 'Mom, Dad, I want to be a whore when I grow up, Her parents, Catherine and Randolph Hearst, assiduously avoided controversy at home. "My parents raised us to be vague," she said.

"Later I found out that my grandmother was a showgirl. My grandfather saw her performing in New York and sent her flowers backstage." When, at 19, she was kid people say mean things behind your back anyway." Adding new roles Her novel about the death of a Hollywood producer, Thomas Ince, right after a wild party on the yacht of William Randolph Hearst is based on a real incident. But then, Shaw, who wrote the book with Cornelia Frances Biddle, a fellow blueblood and former soap opera actress, is more intent on acting than on writing. She has already played campy cameo roles as a school crossing guard in Cry Baby and a fatally misaccessorized juror in Serial Mom, both movies by John Waters, a close friend. Waters' trademark is his subversive depictions of American pop culture and its icons.

Shaw, of course, is one of the biggest icons of them all. If that role is thrust upon you, you may as well have a sense of humor about it. It was not lost on audiences that Shaw, whose trial on bank robbery charges captivated the country in 1976, appears in demure roles in courtroom scenes in both Waters movies. And it must also be a surreal Hearst Shaw the publicity for From $1,095 Per Month her mystery novel, Murder at San Simeon (Scribner, $23). Since her daughters are now 11 and 15, Shaw is re-entering the work force, it seems.

Her line of work? Being a celebrity. On a recent morning at the Edwardian Room of the Plaza, she raised an aristocratic, manicured hand and dug into her bacon and eggs. "I guess I'm supposed to pick at my food," she said, "but it looks so good." Shaw doesn't stand on ceremony. But then, having just been grilled by Howard Stern, why bother? Less than an hour before, Stern had asked her on his live radio show what she was wearing when she was raped in a closet by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army. She handled him with staggering equanimity and told him she had on the blue bathrobe she was kidnapped in.

"I had plenty of people tell me not to go on Howard's show," said Shaw, who has a slight mocking edge to her voice and often sounds amused at the world's absurdities. "Why should I be afraid of him more than anyone else? Because he might say mean things? Most WIN $500! In cash or Lottery tickets. Call 511 and enter code 1015. Each call will cost 50 cents. Elias put the comic book concept on the block, and Bernhard was one of the bidders.

He lost out to Craig Yoe. "The underlying theme has always been and I hope will continue to be for kids to do the right thing," says Bernhard, who has six kids and has been married for 21 years to Gwyn Bernhard, president of the Palm Beach County chapter of the Florida Motion Picture and Television Association. "Kids really got into the Big Boy Club, although there really was no club, just sheer illusion," says Bernhard, who's done industrial design (packages, graphics, icons, you name it) for Westing-house, Elizabeth Arden, Baskin-Robbins, Amoco and more. He and business partner John DeLeo have formed Bernhard Ventures which is launching a series of comic books that target kids' health issues and social concerns. "They'll be distributed by larger corporations that want to become more accessible and improve their image," says the artist, gazing at the Intracoastal from his third-floor balcony.

Awesome view, hon. Any cheap rentals in this building? Bernhard admits he'll miss Big Boy "No, I haven't had enough of him," he says, showing off his collection of Big Boy buttons, toy banks and bric-a-brac. "But I've always enjoyed the challenge of creating new things." And saving things past. "I've got boxes and boxes full of letters, some from adults," he says. "One of my favorites is from a young couple.

They became pen pals through the comic book and carried on this really wonderful mail relationship for years. Now they're married. They wrote to tell me they were enrolling their baby in the Big Boy Club." Hmmmm. I was in the club, Manfred, and I didn't get a husband. KNEW I should've ordered more cheeseburgers.

LORETTA ID was sloppy. The restaurant needed a corporate image it could be proud of." Robert Wian, who started the restaurant chain which began in Glendale, as a 12-seat diner called Bob's Pantry in the '50s asked Bernhard to help. Corporate icon in place, Wian created franchises that included the name of each outlet's owner (i.e., Azar's Big Boy Restaurant), and the chain took off. Marriott bought the biz in the '60s and then sold it to Elias Brothers in '83. Stay with me, people.

It's a tad confusing, I know. Although Bernhard's pudgy 'symbol stood firm for 42 years, Elias thought it was time for Big Boy to get real. So Bernhard is bye-bye, and a new artist who's worked for MTV, Nickelodeon and the Muppets has made Big Boy slightly trimmer and technologically hip. Big Boy nouveau, debuting this month, has a cell phone, computer and fab new friends. And galpal Dolly will have a career, probably interviewing celebrities.

The woman is advised to stay off my turf. "It's the end of an era, yes," says publisher Bernhard, dubbed "King of the Giveaways" in comic book circles. Each month, Bernhard produced about 800,000 copies of The Adventures of Big Boy, the longest-running comic book published continuously by the same creator. It was, and still is, given out gratis by Big Boy franchises throughout the Midwest and California. (Shoney's, meanwhile, left the chain and created the Adventures of Shoney's Big Boy, produced by another artist.

A lawsuit ensued and, long story short, Shoney's dropped Big Boy in '83.) Bernhard's last issue, No. 466, was distributed in August. He retained rights to his comic book interpretations, but the restaurant chain owns Big Boy himself.
