The Oscar-winning actor, suffering ex To Palm Beachers, he was a character who brought life to parties.

Now, thanks to HBO Cinemax, Neil Cargile's legend goes nationwide. Too bad it had to be posthumously. Better known in these parts as "High-Heel Neil," Cargile died in 1995 after contracting malaria in Guyana. A crew already had captured his lifestyle for All Dressed Up and No Place To Go, a study of straight cross-dressers. It runs Thursday night at 11:30 on Cinemax.

Should I tell him or keep my mouth shut? I'm afraid of what his reaction will be. There has been a lot of tension between my husband and Bethany for the past couple of years, and I don't want to add to it.

I have considered telling him when she is not at home so he'll have time to cool down before he confronts her, but I keep losing my nerve. The fact that he treme pain due to a herniated disk, was scheduled to undergo immediate spinal surgery. Hopkins' wife Jennifer flew to Canada from London to be at her husband's side. Bookworm, a 20th Century Fox action adventure, also stars Alec Baldwin and supermodel Elle MacPherson. The movie is two-thirds completed, so there is no question of replacing Hopkins.

YOU MAY have read that the world premiere of Barbra Streisand's ugly-duckling-to-swan romance, The Mirror Has Two Faces, has been switched from Los Angeles to New York. But you haven't heard the reason. Seems that James Brolin, Streisand's latest flame, will be filming in Europe when Mirror opens. He wants to be with his woman on her night of triumph and she wants him there, too, natch.

But the flight is too arduous and exhausting, even for love. So La Babs decided to have the premiere in New York, thereby saving Brolin hours of flying time. Is this a considerate girl or what? Maybe he'll do the Concorde a mere three hours in the air, so many more hours on the ground with Herself. JEANNE TRIPPLEHORN, the lush-lipped movie beauty, has been tapped to co-star in Chekhov's Three Sisters, which will have a limited Broadway run Feb. 13-April 6 at New York's Roundabout Theater.

Amy Irving and Lili Taylor play the other two sisters. David Straithairn and Billy Crudup are among the men who inhabit Chekhov's unhappy family portrait. (Basically, it's three bored girls who want to leave the country for big-city excitement. Twentieth Century Fox made two dozen movies out of this plot, starring everyone from Alice Faye to Ann-Margret. Who says there's no culture in cinema?) Today's Birthdays and high heels.

"If his friends can handle it, and they like it and enjoy it, who am I to say," Cargile's ever present girlfriend Dorothy Koss said. "I go to strictly straight places," Cargile, a Tennessean who owned American Mining and Machinery, said. "Most of the people know me. Singing Cyclospora to the tune of La Macarena, the cast members of the local media hurled rolls of toilet paper into the audience which hurled them back. After the free-for-all, the hall was shrouded in cellulose. In the "Lanting Birthday Olympics," Chase Lanting's birthday cake candles were lighted with an Olympic torch borne by a character posing as crack-house torcher Sam Mohammed.

Palm Beach Town Manager Robert Doney expressed gratitude that the Yellow Feathers this year went easy on him and his town: He was depicted as a donkey in the skit. Palm Beach's most enthusiastic parents Robin and Bill will host another blockbuster party at their Seaspray Avenue home.

They don't expect anything near the furor caused by last year's mock assault by real National Guard troops. No more Purple Hearts ordered for Chase from a military supply catalog. Instead of Camp Lanting, it'll be Chase 1 friends. It will be OK for youj to go golfing. I am used to being alone.

I never, recommend specific doctors, however.

Your gyne-: cologist should be able to help you. Gem of the Day: Resist the temptation to tell your friends about your indigestion. "How are. you?" is a greeting, not a question. Ann Landers' column appears daily.

I will wait for your answer. Please advise. Mom in the Middle Dear Mom: Better your husband hears the news from you now than possibly in a crisis. Bethany should be told that you plan to discuss this with her father because she's still a minor, and as a parent, he has the right to know. Your daughter deserves an honest relationship with both of you as she progresses through her teens.

Dear Abby: My best friend got married two years ago. I was her maid of honor. As a wedding gift, I decided to give them two of the very expensive wineglasses for which they were registered. When I went to buy them, I was told the glasses were back-ordered, and it would be 14 weeks before my friends would receive their gift. The clerk gave me a gift card on which was written the pattern and quantity of the wineglasses.

Due to the festivities that preceded the wedding, I kept forgetting to call the store to place my order. However, I did put the card in a box and wrapped it, so my friends would know they were getting the wineglasses. Abby, I still haven't placed the order. A few months after the wedding, my friend asked me about them, and I told her it would take several more weeks. Abby, at the time of the wedding, my husband and I could afford the glasses, but now the price has gone up.

I'm a full-time homemaker raising our son, and money is tight. This is very embarrassing. What should I do to save face? Come forward and confess my negligence, or forget about it? Wedding Gift Woes Dear Woes: Confess. Since you haven't forgotten about the gift you promised, your friend probably hasn't either. If she's a good friend, she will understand.

If both contracts are doubled, so much the worse for the other team. In today's deal, South at one table opened one club, and East-West found their heart fit and bid to five hearts. North doubled; but West, the declarer, managed to lose only a diamond and a spade, scoring 850 points. PENALTY DOUBLE At the second table, South opened five clubs, stopping East-West from getting together in hearts; all West could do was double.

South ruffed the second heart and led the four of spades. West played low to avoid giving South two spade tricks, and dummy's queen won. Next came a torrent of trumps. When South led his last trump, West, with room for only three cards, had to keep the king of diamonds guarded and therefore bared the ace of spades. South then led a spade, forcing West to lead from the king of diamonds.

South scored 550 in addition to his teammate's 850 points. DAILY QUESTION YOU HOLD: A 10 9 A KQ 3 2 7 5 2 None. You open one heart, and your partner responds one spade. The opponents pass. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid three diamonds, a jump shift that is forcing to game.

If partner has a minimum response with the wrong cards, your eventual game contract may fail; but your gurus would hate to bid only two diamonds, not forcing, for fear that partner would pass.
