The first appearance is from an egg about the size of a small pin head so small that 40,000 of them are everywhere sold for an ounce. From this minute egg is hatched a small black worm which sheds its skin seven different times once in about five days each change or moulting" showing a larger and still larger worm until at last' when fully grown you have a naked worm or cuterpiller nearly three inches in length and of a light "greyish white color. No sooner is the worni fully grown than he proceeds to spin hieh'he does by "evolving out of his inner consciousness" or in other words his stomach an attenuated thread of silk, as fine as a spider's web and this he throws off at the rate of about five feet per minute and in which he soon enwraps himself completely, the ball or "cocoon as it is called being very nearly of the size arid shape of a pea-nut shell. About four hundred of these will yield a pound of silk. Inside of this cocoon the worm dies, so that in fact his whole existence seems to be devoted to spinning and weaving of-his shroud and who sliall say that his final burial place is not as worthy a monument of his brief existence as the pyramids of Egypt are of the proudest of her l'haroahs.

BUTLER CODBTY SHEEP. J. C. Taylor of Walnut township has this to say in the Douglass Indtr of his experience in sheep raising in our county: I commenced to handle sheep in the Tear of 1870 in Kansas. I first bought Kentucky Cotswolds that sheared eight pounds and the next year bought Wisconsin merinos that sheared five pounds.

I crossed the cotswold and merino ewes with the TJhl bucks for seven years. The first year I saw a great improvement so i inougni i. wouia continue doing so. My sheep for the last three yearn have averaged 14 pounds of wool and lots of fine mutton sheep. I sold 500 head of wethers the spring of 1.SS2 to-MeKit- nck and andine for Jfb.au per head and 1 also sold 515 bead of grade ewes for S6.00 per head in the fall of '82.

This year I have bonght 712 head of wethers that were bred from the Uhl bucki, knowing the amount of wool they would produce and the amount of mutton, I would buy no others. In the fall of '81 I bought 150 ewes of Mr. Uhl for which I paid him S3.000. I have sheared them two seasons. In June 1882 they averaged 181 pounds per head.

I have raised wo crops of lambs from these ewes and I now have sixty rams raised from the Uhl Hock and Mr. Uhl says he never raised better and they are for sale at my farm four miles north of Douglass, Butler county Kansas. 1 sold my wool in 1882 for 22 i cents per pound. I have no trouble to find sale for all the ewes I offer. I sold 100 this spring for S1000 and could have sold more.

They are about equal with the cotswold for raising lambs as they afford plenty of milk. I raise eighty-five per cent of my lambs. They come in March and by Angust they are as large as any yearling you can find in the country. The last purchase of the Uhl ewes suits me better than any sheep I ever owned up to this time. The price of wool has nothing to do with such sheep, they pay anyway.

The very best iroa preparation and the one having the largest sale is Brown's Iron Bitters.
