Freshman Anthony Jackson, who is black, popped Womble, who is white, in the face, sending him to the concrete walkway with a thud that was heard by friends on the floor below, according to the FAU police report Womble, who needed emergency surgery to ease life-threatening swelling in his brain, is at home in Naples, still recovering from the injury, and could be permanently impaired, FAU police Lt. Chuck Aurin said Wednesday. Jackson, a celebrated, 20-year-old tailback on a football scholarship from Olympic Heights High School, has been charged with felony battery in connection with the Jan. 28 incident. He was released from jail a day after his Feb.

15 arrest on "supervised own recognizance," in lieu of $5,000 bond. A janitor called police after discovering Womble passed out and growing cold in front of his campus apartment Jan. 28. For a week, police believed Womble hurt himself taking a drunken tumble off a chair, according to the police report There is no record of Womble's blood-alcohol level, the report says, but several partygoers told police Womble and Jackson had consumed beer. Womble, reached Wednesday at his family's home in Naples, said he had been drinking, but not a lot Womble didn't wake up from the injury for two days.

Womble's probation officer on Feb. 6 told FAU police additional information: Womble's half-brother, Brian Smith, had learned from a high school friend that Womble had been out partying and possibly had been hit the night before he was found unconscious. Records show Womble was on probation for possession of drugs with the intent to sell and for alcohol possession charges before his 21st birthday in January.
