intKALM BCACrt KJSI bHlUrtOAf, MARCH 10, 2001 Truck-train crash scatters bread which destroyed a crossing gate and spun around and struck a pole in the median strip, Messer said. The metal exterior of its right side wrapped around the poll like aluminum foil around a tube, exposing its cargo area. It then snapped back, and the truck's left rear bumper struck the left rear door of a car carrying George and Lee Roller, which had been sitting in traffic. "We're a little shaky, but well be OK," said George Roller, who'd been driving with his wife to shop. The couple lives in Cleveland, Ohio, and owns a home in Boynton Beach.

Green and gray plastic flats lay scattered on the street along with loaves, baguettes and rolls, some still in their plastic wrap. Napiello is an independent bread retailer who had just picked up his wares at two Broward County bakeries, said Richard Hall, owner of one of them, Rosario's Comer Bakery in Deerfield Beach. The northbound Silver Meteor, with two locomotives and 12 cars, was carrying about 120 people and a crew of 16, Amtrak spokeswoman Nancy Calvert said from Chicago. She said no one aboard was hurt eliotkleinbergpbpost.com By Eliot Weinberg Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DELRAY BEACH A bread truck driver escaped serious injury Friday after the truck was clipped by a northbound Amtrak train, peeling the truck's sides and scattering baked goods across Linton Boulevard. The cleanup closed both westbound exits from Interstate 95 as well as both entrances from the west for about 11 hours, police said.

Anthony Joseph Napiello, 55, of Margate suffered head cuts in the crash, which occurred about noon. He was treated at Delray Medical Center and released, authorities said. Napiello was charged with failure to obey a traffic control device at a railroad crossing, Delray Beach police spokesman Jeff Messer said. Napiello was in the righthand eastbound lane of Linton Boulevard just east of Congress Avenue in heavy traffic and became boxed in, straddling the CSX railroad crossing. Other motorists "kept telling him to back up, back up," just before impact Delray Beach police Lt Robert Musco said.

When the plan to relocate to Lighthouse came up at Wednesday's town commission meeting, officials weren't happy about the distance students will have to travel. "Gee whiz, that's a burden," Commissioner Ken Roetz said Friday.

A 12-mile drive from Lighthouse to Lake Park Elementary on Friday, using Interstate 95, lasted from 2:21 p.m. to 2:41 p.m. in moderate traffic and traveling at roughly the speed limit Johnson said "a lot of students" spend 20 minutes on the At least one parent Vincent Cruz, said he wished the distance were shorter but said this idea is better than sending the students to North Palm Beach Elementary, where parents publicly opposed the suggestion. thomascollinspbpost.com By Thomas R. Collins Palm Beach Post Staff Writer LAKE PARK Parents of Lake Park Elementary School students may finally know where their children will be going to school next year.

The school district plans to move the students to lighthouse Elementary in Jupiter while Lake Park Elementary is renovated, incoming Superintendent Art Johnson said Friday. Lighthouse Elementary has room to spare since half of its students will be moving to a new school in the Abacoa development Johnson said. Lake Park students would attend class in portables on the Lighthouse campus during the 2001-2002 school year and return to the refurbished Lake Park Elementary the following year, he said. "We have a perfect situation of having really a holding school ready and able to handle the displacement of students while their school is rebuilt," he said. It won't cost the district any more money because no porta- STAFF GRAPHIC PAUL J.

TILLMAN FUNERAL HOME, WEST PALM BEACH FAMILY OWNED OPERATED Wortmann, who was found 30 feet from where the car came to a rest, died at the scene. The child was treated for minor injuries at Del-ray Medical Center and released. Wortmann might have died even if he had been strapped in, "but his chances for surviving would have been much better," Fleming said. The child was strapped into a rear-facing infant carrier, which suffered hardly a scratch despite the horrific impact, he said. Investigator Larry Colagiovanni said in his report that the youngster "most likely would have been killed if he was not properly secured." "It speaks so highly for the integrity and necessity of properly securing our children," Fleming said.

"The public's fully behind the child safety issue. There's so many avenues to get them, even if they can't afford them." eliotkleinbergpbpost.com By Eliot Weinberg Palm Beach Post Staff Writer An 8-month-old boy survived a car accident that killed his father late Thursday because the infant was properly secured in a car seat, authorities said Friday. "If a miracle," said Sgt. Kerry Fleming of the Palm Beach County sheriffs traffic division. David F.

Wortmann, 33, of suburban Boca Raton was not wearing a seat belt and died when he fell out as the car rolled at least four times on Glades Road between Powerline Road and Florida's Turnpike about 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Fleming said. Wortmann's wife, who was following him in another car, saw the crash and pulled the infant, David G. Wortmann, from the crushed car, Fleming said. Wortmann was heading west, driving over the 45-mph speed limit and changing lanes, when he lost control of his car, which struck the center median and overturned, a sheriff report said.
