Great-great-grandpa's By Paul Reid Falm Beach Post Staff Writer It just wasn't a very jolly Christmas for any of the 800 U.S. soldiers and 300 Seminoles who battled in the swamp near Lake Okeechobee that Christmas Day in 1837. For Col. Richard Gentry, who rode and sailed and hiked all the way from Missouri to kill Seminoles, it was to be the last Christmas.

All the landscapes political, geographic, his Stanc as- SI tk torical conspired against Gentry on that Christmas Day. Central Florida was so unknown to white men that the map Gentry carried didn't even show Lake Okeechobee. Government map makers had dismissed rumors of a big lake. And bureaucrats had dismissed the Indians as unworthy opponents. "I only wanted to be a ballet dancer," Seymour said. "The rest of this was something to do when I couldn't dance." The rest includes an impressive film and TV career Somewhere in Time, Captains and Kings and, of course, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. More recently, the "rest" includes fashion and costume design, and art, which brought her to Palm Beach. Seymour painted as a child back in England.

However, 10 years ago she began pursuing that muse in earnest. Two years ago one of her paintings caught the eye of Escada chairman and founder Wolfgang Ley, who proposed a deal. Now a collection of Jane's work is making stops at Escada boutiques, and a limited edition scarf, replicating her painting You Have To Give, is offered for sale. Proceeds go to local charities. Wednesday, she left for Europe.

"I'm sneaking off to Malta," said Seymour, as stunning in person as she is on screen despite recent back surgery that requires a brace. "James (husband James Keach) is directing a movie there for NBC. ItH be a quick four days with the kids. Then back to New York and then to Montreal to shoot." Give your regards to Broadway Hey, kid. Tryouts will be Saturday for the role of "Little Kim" in Showboat, March 13-18 at the Kravis Center. Producers want a girl, age 8-11, who, with a guardian, is available for all eight performances. Hopefuls must bring their own tights and Mary Jane or black shoes at noon Saturday to Palm Beach Ballet Center, 736 Park Lake Park. "There's no lines, no singing, no dancing and no pay," said Barbara GauK, spokesperson for SFX, the show's producer. Call 833-0705 for details.

Today, the battleground seems such a pretty place to die, the new-growth cypress swamp just south of the city of Okeechobee, just across Taylor Creek the towering canopy, smooth weathered trunks, filtered gold sunlight on cool earth, curtains of Spanish moss that part in the breeze to reveal a blue heaven beyond. The marketing of products targeted to seniors traditionally has been a rather dreary affair: utilitarian walkers, clunky hospital tables, lighted magnifying glasses, plastic pill organizers sold through medical supply centers and catalogs.
